Central Baptist Church of Oak Ridge has its annual Easter Resurrection Celebration on Saturday, April 8.

The celebration is from 12-1:30 p.m. April 8. Free hot dogs, games, blow ups, and the story of Easter, along with an egg hunt, will be available to all preschoolers and children through the sixth grade, a press release said. Activities will be held rain or shine.

Roane State Massage Therapy Club offering massages through end of April

It’s a relaxing way to start a weekend, and the donations to this fundraiser also help Roane State club members obtain the licenses they need to launch their careers.

It’s the Roane State Massage Therapy Club’s program to offer one-hour, full-body massages. The cost is $25. Roane State students, faculty, and staff get a $5 discount.

The 17 students in the club provide the full-body massages from 1 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. on Fridays in the massage therapy area, located at the west end of the Goff Building on the Oak Ridge Campus.

This year’s edition of the annual fundraiser is being conducted through April 29, except on Good Friday. [Read more…]

Working together through community organizing topic at Lunch with the League

A Tuesday lunch will focus on ways people within the community can create positive changes through community organizing, a press release said. The public is invited.

It’s Lunch with the League at noon Tuesday, April 4, in the Social Hall of the Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church, or ORUUC. Reverend Jake Morrill will be the featured speaker.

ORUUC is located at 809 Oak Ridge Turnpike.

“Community organizing is a road-tested model of effective democracy in local communities,” Morrill said in a press release. “Building on relationships forged in one-on-one conversations, effective organizing helps neighbors form a network that gets big things done. Professor to discuss gay civil rights movements on Monday

Roane State Community College professor Don Windham will be the guest speaker at the Monday, April 3, PFLAG meeting. In his presentation, Windham will explore the rise of early gay civil rights movements beginning with the Mattachine Society and the Daughters of Bilitis to today, a press release said. The public is invited.

The meeting will be held at the Jewish Congregation of Oak Ridge located at 101 West Madison Lane. Social time will start at 6:45 pm. The meeting will be from 7-8 p.m.

Windham has been professor of psychology at Roane State Community College in Oak Ridge since 1990, the press release said. He has a doctorate in psychology from the University of Tennessee. [Read more…]

Clinton man sentenced to 30 years in death of mother fleeing dispute

CLINTON—A Clinton man was sentenced to 30 years in prison on Thursday for the 2014 stabbing death of a mother trying to flee a domestic dispute.

Kieth William Pittman, 28, pleaded guilty to an amended charge of second-degree murder and a second charge of tampering with evidence. He was sentenced to 25 years on the second-degree murder charge and five years on the tampering with evidence charge.

The sentences must be served consecutively, meaning Pittman has an effective 30-year sentence, Anderson County Criminal Court Judge Don Elledge said during a plea agreement hearing in Clinton on Thursday.

The victim, Heather McKamey, 22, was a mother of three boys. She and Pittman had two of the boys together.

McKamey was stabbed outside her apartment at 301 Park Avenue in north Clinton after an argument between her and Pittman became physical at about 2:25 a.m. Saturday, April 19, 2014, according to police reports and an affidavit filed in Anderson County General Sessions Court in Clinton.

“While both the victim (McKamey) and suspect (Pittman) were in the driveway, the suspect stabbed the victim in the stomach with the knife he had taken from the kitchen,” according to the affidavit, filed by Clinton Police Department Detective Sergeant Russell Barker. “Witnesses advised the victim fled down Park Avenue to McAdoo Street yelling for help, and the suspect chased her.” [Read more…]

When it comes to the burgeoning health care field, there are plenty of jobs out there.

That became obvious to some 200 Roane State students on the verge of graduating who took advantage of the college’s annual Healthcare Job Fair, held March 29 at the Roane State campus in Oak Ridge.

“There are a lot of potential job openings,” said Trista Murrell, set to graduate from the college’s physical therapist assistant program in August. She was handing out resumes to prospective employers and, she said, “everyone has been very helpful.”

Some 50 companies and institutions set up displays in the atrium and hallways of the college’s Coffey-McNally Building.

Employers included hospitals, medical clinics, nursing homes, health care recruiting firms, and companies involved in medical record-keeping. Even representatives of the Army and the state’s prison system had displays. Prison nurses start out at $26.50 an hour, a spokeswoman said. [Read more…]

Road closure on Lafayette on Saturday for traffic signal repairs

The City of Oak Ridge will temporarily close Lafayette Drive to northbound traffic at Emory Valley Road from approximately 8 a.m. until 12 p.m. on Saturday, April 1. Traffic will be detoured onto Emory Valley Road.

The closure is necessary to begin repairs on the traffic signal at that intersection, a press release said. The metal upright and mast arm that supports signal heads for northbound Lafayette Drive traffic was damaged during a car crash on January 13.

The repair will require the removal, inspection, and replacement of the metal upright and mast arm, the press release said. The complete repair will take between six and 18 weeks, depending on the degree of damage to the structural foundation of the pole. [Read more…]

Clinch River Home Health in Clinton has received a $30,000 grant from The Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee. The money will be used during the next six months to help support Clinch River Home Health’s Senior Safety Program to help provide Life Link Medical Alert Systems to the homes of clients who need the protection of 24/7 emergency assistance with the push of a button.

The Life Link Medical Alert Systems are provided at no cost to the nonprofit organization’s clients.

“Just pushing a button on the pendant brings needed help,” a press release said. “Each alert system is activated with three easy steps. Four contact phone numbers can be stored, and automatic 911 dialing occurs if none of the contacts are available. The wireless pendant provides two-way voice transmission for safety, security, and peace of mind for seniors living alone as well as their contact friends and family.”

The press release said the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee is a charitable organization dedicated to enriching the quality of life, and it has announced grants to 121 Tennessee organizations as part of a one-time Serving Tennessee’s Seniors grant opportunity. [Read more…]

Two Roane State staff members helped introduce more than 200 high school girls to the world of engineering during an event at the Y-12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge.

Showing the students how to operate a robotic arm was Gordon Williams, director of the college’s mechatronics program. Kim Harris, director of Workforce Training and Placement at Roane State, assisted in the presentation.

The demonstration was part of “Introduce a Girl to Engineering,” a program held February 23 at Y-12’s New Hope Center.

Students from 15 area schools participated in the event conducted in concert with “Girl Day,” an initiative founded by DiscoverE, formerly the National Engineers Week Foundation. [Read more…]

Reception for Roane State Student Art Show is April 27

Roane State Community College will host an April 27 reception as part of its annual Student Art Show in the O’Brien Art Gallery on the Roane County campus.

The reception and awards ceremony is Thursday, April 27, at 1 p.m. in the art gallery. The public is invited.

This annual event (April 12-27) is open to all Roane State student artists and is an opportunity for students to hone their skills and gain exhibition experience. This year’s juror is Brian Jobe.

Community meal is Friday at Oak Ridge church

Every community needs a time and place to come together and what better way to do this than with food, friendship, and connectedness?

The final Friday of each month, the Stone Soup Ministry team at Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church, or ORUUC, invites its neighbors to their table. You can join them this Friday, March 31.

Dine-in or take-out will be available from 5 to 6 p.m., a press release said. ORUUC is located at 809 Oak Ridge Turnpike (close to traffic light number 2) in Oak Ridge.
