On Monday, November 13, thirteen restaurant locations throughout the county will donate a portion of their sales to support Aid to Distressed Families of Appalachian Counties (ADFAC).  The event, Dine & Donate, happens on the second Monday of each month.

November 13 is your time to enjoy a hot, delicious bowl of chili or soup compliments of The Soup Kitchen, 47 East Tennessee Avenue, as a featured part of the Dine and Donate program, a press release said.

The restaurant’s menu of soups and sandwiches changes daily, and it’s been said they make the best Philly Cheese Steak sandwich in the city. The restaurant also features fresh salads and homemade breads. Gail Dittmer, manager of the eatery, said the store does lots of catering to area businesses with the two Soup Kitchen trucks that deliver hot provisions. [Read more…]

It’s an update of a classic comedy about a slob and a neat freak living together in disharmony, but this time the characters are female.

It’s Neil Simon’s “The Odd Couple (Female Version),” and the curtain went up on the Roane State Community College Playmakers’ adaptation on Friday, November 10, for a two-week run in the O’Brien Theatre on the college’s main campus in Harriman.

“I’ve been wanting to do a Neil Simon play for a while,” said Jonathan Chemay, Roane State theatre technician, who’s directed three other recent Playmakers productions. “I think (Simon) was a comedic genius.”

Simon’s update of his contemporary classic, about slovenly Oscar Madison and obsessive Felix Unger, was rewritten by the playwright two decades after his original version premiered.

The original Odd Couple featured Felix and Oscar hosting a poker game with four guys as guests. In the female version, Florence and Olive have a get-together with four girlfriends for a night of “Trivial Pursuit.” [Read more…]

Materials and Chemistry Laboratory Inc., or MCLinc, is a sponsor for ADFAC’s 2017 Corporate Membership Campaign, and the company is also a sponsor for this year’s Bill Wilcox Bow Tie Event, which will be held Saturday, November 11, a press release said.

MCLinc’s President and Chief Executive Officer Barry Stephenson and Laboratory Manager Michele Sanders met recently with ADFAC representatives to celebrate their corporate support for the local agency.

MCLinc is a commercial applied research company providing high-quality consulting and analytical testing for industrial forensics, materials characterization, environmental chemistry, and process optimization, the press release said.

“As MCLinc is an employee-owned company, all corporate charitable gifts are generously supported by the employees,” Stephenson said. “I am so pleased that our company and our employees are able and excited about supporting such a worthy cause as ADFAC. We are very much looking forward to the Bow Tie Award Event this year as we all celebrate local volunteer Tom Row.”

CROSSVILLE—These athletes are truly the nation’s top guns.

The Roane State Community College Shooting Sports Team won the national championship among community colleges in a competition that measures marksmanship with shotguns.

It was a quick march to the top for the team. The Roane State squad came into existence three years ago and placed third nationwide then. Last year, Roane State’s sharpshooters captured second place.

A reception for the team will be held Wednesday, November 15, at 5 p.m. CST at Roane State Cumberland County campus, 2567 Cook Road in Crossville.

To win nationally, “It takes a lot of hard work and dedication as well as a lot of years of experience in practice and competition,” said Kenneth Carey, the volunteer head coach. Assistant coaches are Kevin Hembree and James Wattenbarger. [Read more…]

Fundraiser this evening for family of firefighter who died Tuesday

Robert “R.L.” Braden, 44, a firefighter with the Medford Volunteer Fire Department, died at his home on Tuesday after a courageous battle with cancer, but a Spaghetti Dinner fundraiser will still take place at Anderson County High School this evening (Saturday, November 11).

The fundraiser is scheduled to start at 5 p.m., and the “Light The Night” event will be held in Braden’s memory at 8 p.m.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends,” said Mark Lucas, Anderson County Sheriff’s Department chief deputy.

Triwizard Tournament in Jackson Square today

The Triwizard Tournament is in Jackson Square from 3-6 p.m. today (Saturday, November 11).

The Triwizard Tournament includes games, buttered beer, food, shops, a silent auction, owls exam, and trivia at 5 p.m. followed by 110 in the Shade playing at Razzlebery’s Lab at 7 p.m., organizers said.

“Join us for an afternoon full of family fun!” organizers said.

TBI identifies man who died in officer-involved shooting in Clinton on Wednesday

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has identified the man who died in an officer-involved shooting in Clinton on Wednesday as Roger Raymond York Jr.

York, 32, is listed as having a Clinton address in Anderson County jail records.

He died after he fired a weapon at Clinton Police Department officers on East Drive in Clinton on Wednesday night, according to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation. One of the officers fired back, hitting York, who died, according to preliminary information from the TBI.

The three Clinton Police Department officers were not injured, the TBI said. The three officers were at the home in the 1000 block of East Drive after receiving information that a man with outstanding warrants was at the residence, the TBI said. [Read more…]

The program is titled “Pathway to Politics: Engaging the African-American Community.”

Documentary focusing on school funding, privatization at Pellissippi on Thursday

The League of Women Voters of Oak Ridge is urging members interested in school choice to attend a documentary at Pellissippi State Community College in Hardin Valley on Thursday.

The documentary is titled “Backpack Full of Cash.” It’s narrated by Matt Damon, and it’s described in an event flyer as a film “exploring the real cost of privatizing America’s public schools.”

In the United States, $600 billion per year is spent to educate children, a fact “near and dear” to proponents of privatizing, according to information provided by Kay Moss.

Filmed during the 2013-2014 school year in Nashville, New Orleans, Philadelphia, and other cities, the feature-length documentary narrated by Damon concentrates on how privatization is devastating public school funding, the information said. [Read more…]

American Cancer Society hosts Night of Hope Dinner in Clinton on Thursday

The American Cancer Society is hosting the Sixth Night of Hope Dinner on Thursday, November 9, in Clinton.

The event starts at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at 205 Main in Clinton. The dinner will feature special guest Maria Cornelius, who is a breast cancer survivor and author of “The Final Season – The Perserverance of Pat Summitt,” a press release said.

The event has been recruiting table hosts, whose role is to invite seven to eight other people to sit at their table and help in serving dinner. They will also be assisted by high school student volunteers who will be waiting on tables. There is no fee to host a table.

Throughout the fun-filled evening, guests at the table will be encouraged to tip their waiters for good service, and tallies will be run throughout the evening for competition, a press release said. The table with the most tips at the end of the evening will be crowned the 2017 Night of Hope Winner and awarded a prize package. [Read more…]

All invited to open house at Roane State’s Oak Ridge campus on Thursday

An open house is scheduled for Thursday, November 9, in the atrium of the Coffey-McNally Building at Roane State’s Oak Ridge campus at 701 Briarcliff Avenue.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for prospective Roane State students of all ages to learn about various academic programs, how to enroll, and how to apply for financial aid,” said Jim McDaniel, director of student enrollment.

The program will begin at 6 p.m. Information about curricula, admissions requirements, financial aid, the state’s new Reconnect program, and student life will be displayed on tables. Staff and faculty members will be available to answer questions, a press release said. [Read more…]

ADFAC’s Bill Wilcox Bow Tie Award Event will be held Saturday, November 11, and it will honor local volunteer Tom Row.

The Bow Tie Award Event is from 5-10 p.m. Saturday at the DoubleTree Hotel in Oak Ridge. Row is the fifth winner of the Bill Wilcox Bow Tie Award.

Also Saturday, ADFAC will posthumously honor Kathy Stimpson, whose committed efforts to help those less fortunate led to the inspiration and establishment of ADFAC in the mid 1980s, a press release said.

The Bow Tie Award Event is designed to honor a local volunteer and serve as a signature fundraising event for ADFAC and the Bow Tie Endowment Fund, which was established to ensure the short and long-term sustainability of ADFAC. Previous Bow Tie Award winners include Ray Smith (2013), Tim Myrick (2014), Cande Seay (2015), and Bear Stephenson (2016). [Read more…]
