Free Christmas concert, sing-along on Sunday

The public is invited to come to the Oak Ridge Community Band’s “Christmas Concert & Sing-Along” on Sunday afternoon, December 9. This free event will be held at 3:30 p.m. in the sanctuary of the First Baptist Church at 1101 Oak Ridge Turnpike.

“The Christmas and Sing-Along concert directed by new conductor Shaun Salem is a good opportunity to relax from holiday stress, enjoy the true spirit of the season with familiar holiday music, and also have the chance to sing favorite Christmas carols accompanied by the band,” a press release said. Pilot Club has Arts & Crafts Fair on Friday, Saturday

The Pilot Club’s 42nd annual Arts and Crafts Fair will take place from 10 a.m.-7 p.m. on Friday, November 16, and 9 a.m.-5 p.m. on Saturday, November 17, at the Oak Ridge Civic Center.

The craft fair will include 84 booths, with a variety of arts and crafts such as silk and burlap wreaths, jewelry, scarfs, handbags, glass etching, crocheted items, repurposed furniture, pottery, wind chimes, lotions, scrubs, wood working, jams, jellies, natural goats milk soaps, photographers, authors, wood chimes, Christmas crafts…and the list goes on and on, a press release said. ORHS Masquers presents ‘Our Town’ this week

Oak Ridge High School Masquers, the school’s drama program, will present Thornton Wilder’s Pulitzer Prize-winning “Our Town” for three performances this week.

The performances are scheduled for Thursday, November 8, at 7 p.m.; Saturday, November 10, at 7 p.m.; and Sunday, November 11, at 2 p.m., at the Oak Ridge Performing Arts Center. [Read more…]

Friends of Oak Ridge Library Book Sale is Thursday-Sunday

Friends of the Oak Ridge Library will hold its Fall 2018 Book Sale from Thursday to Sunday in the Oak Ridge Public Library Auditorium.

“Plan to come to the Thursday evening Members Sale, then come Friday to purchase the titles you thought about buying but didn’t on Thursday,” a press release said. “Come Saturday to find half-price bargains and to place your winning bid on the Silent Auction items you want to take home. Return on Sunday to fill a bag with titles for your friends and family and the many Free Libraries scattered about town. Every day you will find a wide selection of fiction and nonfiction books and nonprint media with most titles 50 cents or $1 each.”

The Book Sale will be open to members only on Thursday evening, October 25, from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Memberships ($5 for individuals, $10 for families) can be bought that evening. [Read more…]

New conductor starts Community Band/Wind Ensemble season with Sunday concert

New conductor Shaun Salem will begin the Oak Ridge Community Band/Wind Ensemble’s 2018-2019 subscription season with the Fall Concert on Sunday.

The concert is scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, October 14, at the Oak Ridge High School Performing Arts Center.

“The Community Band/Wind Ensemble is extending an invitation to Oak Ridgers and area residents to attend the October 14 performance and give a resounding welcome to Shaun Salem as he ushers in the ‘Prelude to a New Era’ season with indoor concerts from October through April,” a press release said. It’s an extravaganza for the Halloween season that features a cast of 130 singers, dancers, musicians, and actors, and it’s growing in popularity.

It’s the annual “Kindred Spirits” production, with performances at 1 and 3 p.m. on Saturday, October 27, in the O’Brien Theatre on Roane State Community College’s main campus at 276 Patton Lane in Harriman. Admission is $5.

“It’s one of the highlights of our year,” said Professor Brenda Luggie, Roane State’s choral director. “The music students absolutely love it.”

The hour-long, family-friendly show features Roane State music students, actors from Midway High School’s Drama Club, and about 100 dancers of all ages from Arts in Motion, with studios in Rockwood and Kingston. [Read more…]

Today: ‘Basics of Ghost Hunting’ at Clinton Library

There will be a presentation on the basics of ghost hunting at the Clinton Public Library this evening (Friday, October 12). It’s one of several events at the library this month that have also included or will include cooking, Harry Potter, and chess.

“Looking to find a ghostly spirit this Halloween?” a press release said. “Join us on Friday, October 12, from 5-6:45 p.m. for the ‘Basics of Ghost Hunting.’ The founders of the East Valley Paranormal Society will give a presentation on the basics of ghost hunting, evidence of the paranormal activity they have discovered, and conclude with a a question-and-answer session.”

The library had its first-ever Cookbook Club on Monday, October 8.

The next Fandom Friday at the library later this month will feature Harry Potter. [Read more…]

Library closures announced for rooftop HVAC work

The Oak Ridge Public Library expects to be closed on five separate occasions between October 15 and November 23 to allow for planned work to the rooftop air conditioning and heating system as well as staff work days, a press release said.

“During this six-week time period, patrons should expect increased noise and a high level of construction activity in and around the library,” the press release said.

Street Painting Festival at Jackson Square will include Ed Westcott Challenge

In celebration of Oak Ridge’s 75th anniversary, the 19th annual Oak Ridge Street Painting Festival will have two “firsts.”

The October 13 event will be held in historic Jackson Square, and it will offer the first-ever Ed Westcott Challenge for artists interested in chalking a creative interpretation of a famous photograph by Manhattan Project photographer Ed Westcott.

The festival will, as always, offer prizes for artists in each category. But this year, artists in any category can win an all-ages, all-categories bonus prize as part of the Ed Westcott Challenge, a press release said.

Sponsored by the Rotary Club of Oak Ridge and a fundraiser for Roane State Community College scholarships, the annual art extravaganza will be held on Saturday, October 13, at historic Jackson Square. Students from 75 years of Oak Ridge Schools share memories in new book

Students from each of the 75 classes of Oak Ridge Schools have shared their school memories in a new book.

There is a “reveal party” for the book, “Celebrating 75 Years of Excellence in Education: Oak Ridge Schools, 1944-2018,” on Wednesday at Oak Ridge High School. The celebration is scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, September 26, in the Oak Ridge High School Amphitheater.

The celebration is being hosted by the Oak Ridge Public Schools Education Foundation.

Moira Kaye—ORHS graduate, former local television news anchor, and Miss Tennessee 1983—will lead a panel discussion with ORHS alumni across the decades from the 1940s to the 1980s, a press release said. The panelists and Kaye are book anchor authors for their ORHS graduation classes. Their stories and other reminiscing will be further highlighted by an ORHS choral presentation of the ORHS Alma Mater and the ORHS Fight Song and the presentation of colors by the ORHS JROTC Flag Corps. Young Kim to perform at First United Methodist

First United Methodist Church of Oak Ridge’s Newsong Concert Series is hosting Young Kim in a piano recital on Sunday, September 23, at 3 p.m.

Kim is an assistant professor of music at Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, Tennessee, where she teaches applied piano, class piano, and music theory; she also directs the LMU Choir.

Kim received a doctor of musical arts in piano performance with a minor in music theory from Louisiana State University, where she studied with Willis Delony. Under the guidance of Delony and minor professor David Smyth, Kim completed her monograph, titled “Practical Performance Considerations for the Andante con moto of Beethoven’s Piano Concerto in G Major, Op. 58.” [Read more…]
