Thelma Elizabeth Rink

Thelma Elizabeth Rink, better known as Terry, age 84, of Clinton, passed away Thursday, July 25, at Methodist Medical Center in Oak Ridge.

Terry enjoyed life to the fullest, loved her cat Patches, and loved playing bingo. She worked at Ace Hardware on Market Street in Clinton from 1993-2007.

Terry was preceded in death by her husband, Erick George Rink; parents, William T. Bulmer and Iva Margaret Matilda Newman Bulmer; brothers, Earl Hughes, Mossam (Lucky) Hughes, and Rae Abbey; sister, Margaret Della Marie Keusch; and brothers-in-law, George Keusch and Frank Crisologo. [Read more…]

A leader in high-performance computing at Oak Ridge National Laboratory will be the featured speaker at the monthly meeting of Friends of ORNL.

Jeff Nichols is associate laboratory director for ORNL’s Computing and Computational Sciences Directorate. Nichols leads the laboratory’s advanced high-performance computing in priority areas such as climate change, nuclear energy, fusion energy, nanotechnology, and biotechnology, a press release said. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Dot Harris, director of the Office of Economic Impact and Diversity, visited Oak Ridge National Laboratory Thursday and Friday.

Harris spoke at the Research Alliance in Math and Science banquet Thursday evening, and she attended a RAMS poster session that preceded the dinner.

Her agenda also included visits to ORNL’s supercomputing facilities, Spallation Neutron Source, the Carbon Fiber Technology Facility, and the Manufacturing Demonstration Facility, as well as discussions on the lab’s education, outreach, partnerships, and small business programs. [Read more…]

Utility worker injured in Anderson County trench

A Hallsdale-Powell Utility District worker suffered a broken leg Thursday when a piece of rock came loose from the wall of a trench he was working in and fell on him.

James Moore was working on a project to install a water line on East Wolf Valley Road shortly before 11 a.m. Thursday when the accident happened. Moore was pulled from the trench by emergency crews and taken to the University of Tennessee Medical Center for treatment of his injury.

Local attorney spearheading stuffed animal drive for Juvenile Court

A local attorney who practices primarily in Anderson County Juvenile Court has organized a stuffed animal drive to help calm the fears and anxiety of children who have to testify in court.

Rebecca Franklin is celebrating her birthday this year by spearheading a drive to collect new stuffed animals that will be placed in a toy box that was custom-built by her husband and will find a permanent home in the juvenile courtroom where children must speak to the judge. Franklin said she has seen a similar program work in Knox County and the stuffed animals helps children feel more comfortable and open up about the issues that have brought them to the courtroom. On Saturday Aug. 24, a 3-on-3 basketball tournament will be held in Oak Ridge to benefit the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life of Oak Ridge. The tournament will be held at the Oak Ridge Civic Center with the first game to be played at 8:30 a.m.

There are three divisions: Competitive, Non-Competitive, and Women’s, and the registration fee is $60 per team ($20 per person). Each participant will receive a Relay for Life T-shirt.

There will also be a three-point contest at the conclusion of the 3-on-3 tournament and you can participate in that for a $5 donation entry fee. For more information or to reserve a spot for your team today, contact Kenneth Herring at (865) 310-2664.

ORAU Extreme Classroom Makeover

Oak Ridge Associated Universities announced on Wednesday that it will have its Extreme Classroom Makeover for the sixth year.

The makeover will be awarded to one lucky school teacher, a press release said. The award provides $25,000 worth of the latest educational technologies, training, and/or support. Teachers interested in competing must file their intent to apply no later than Sept. 13. [Read more…]

The 16th Annual Dick Smyser Community Lecture Series continues on Tuesday, Aug. 13, featuring Professor Michael L. Corradini, director of the Wisconsin Energy Institute and past president of the American Nuclear Society. He will discuss “The Need for Nuclear Power in the U.S.”

The event is sponsored by Friends of ORNL (Oak Ridge National Laboratory). It’s free of charge and will be held at the American Museum of Science and Energy at 300 S. Tulane Ave. in Oak Ridge. The Red Tent Women’s group will meet at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church, and all women are welcome to attend, a press release said.

In 35 years, the annual Keys Fillauer Invitational Golf Tournament and Clambake has raised $653,000 for the Ronald McDonald House in Knoxville, a press release said.

This year’s tournament is this weekend—on Friday, Aug. 2, and Saturday, Aug. 3—and it will be the last.

The press release said the inaugural KFI was in 1978 with nine participants at Southwest Point in Kingston. [Read more…]

Holocaust survivor Arthur Pais will speak at a program sponsored by federal workers in Oak Ridge next week.

The free Aug. 8 program is open to the public. It’s co-sponsored by the Oak Ridge Federal Women’s Program, or FWP, and the Federally Employed Women Oak Ridge Chapter.
