Mary Elizabeth “Betty” Jackson

Mary Elizabeth “Betty” Jackson, age 88, of Oak Ridge, went to meet our Lord on Friday, Feb. 21, 2014, at the Methodist Medical Center.

She was born Jan. 2, 1926, in Louisville, Tenn., the daughter of Burl and Lula Renfro Jarnigan.

Mrs. Jackson was an avid golfer and former member of the Oak Ridge Country Club, where she won the championship for several years in Ladies Golf. She also won championships in the Knoxville area and the Tennessee Senior Championship. As much as she loved golf, her greatest passion was singing soprano in the Celebration Choir and the Senior Choir of Central Baptist Church of Oak Ridge, where she was a faithful member for 30 years. Her life was a witness to others for the Lord.

Mrs. Jackson was an avid dog lover and enjoyed her summer vegetable gardens. [Read more…]

James W. “Red” Halsey

James W. Halsey, of Oak Ridge, entered the Church Triumphant on Saturday. After battling bravely and persistently for several years, “Red” died of his relentless disease early on Feb. 22, 2014. A native of Wytheville, Va., born in 1927, James and his late wife, Peggy moved to Oak Ridge in 1954. He worked for 34 years at Y-12, retiring in 1988.

As a youth in Wytheville, Red played football at Wytheville High School. He married Lula Maglin “Peggy” Pannell before heading to the Army. He was stationed stateside during World War II.

James loved bowling, fishing, and golfing. He was a pitcher in the slow-pitch leagues in Oak Ridge. His sports career highlights include a hole-in-one in 1983 and a 296 bowling score. He was inducted into the Wythe County sports Hall of Fame in 1989. [Read more…]

Lester Branham, age 88, of Clinton, passed away on Thursday, Feb. 13, 2014, at Norris Health and Rehabilitation Center in Norris.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and gardening.

Lester was preceded in death by his parents, Shirley and Martha Branham; wife, Betty Branham; daughter, Janet Cox; and brothers, Fletcher Branham and Leaburn Branham. [Read more…]

Willis Edwin “Bill” Jackson, age 87, a resident of Oliver Springs, passed away Monday, Feb. 17, 2014, at Briarcliff Health Care Center in Oak Ridge.

Mr. Jackson was born Sept. 23, 1926, in Chevrolet, Ky. He and his family moved from Kentucky to Coalfield in the early ’30s. In 1934, the family moved to Loudon, and in 1937 they moved to Oliver Springs where they continued to live.

Bill was a retired heavy equipment operator who worked in the strip mining industry. His first employment was at the Oliver Springs Brick Yard when he was 14 years old. He later worked as a heavy equipment operator during the construction of the K-25 federal plant in Oak Ridge. [Read more…]

Fred W. Postma Jr. went home to his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Sunday, Feb. 23, 2014.

He was a faithful member of Central Baptist Church of Oak Ridge, where he served many years as deacon and Sunday school director, and played in the Central Baptist Church Orchestra.

Following service in the U.S. Army, he attended Troy State University and graduated from Mississippi College and from The University of Mississippi. He was a chemist and worked at both Y-12 and K-25 in Oak Ridge. He had a lifelong and fervent love of learning, and was active in the Oak Ridge Institute of Continued Learning as well as being an Oak Ridge High School mathematics tutor. He played in the Oak Ridge Community Bank and Wind Ensemble. [Read more…]

Rosemary Haberthier Warne

Rosemary Haberthier Warne, 90, passed away Thursday, Feb. 13, 2014. Beloved daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Rosemary’s loving, kind, and generous spirit will be remembered by all those whose lives she touched.

She was born in St. Louis, Mo., on July 24, 1923, and was the only child to the late George A. and Joan Haberthier.

Rosemary attended All Saints Catholic Elementary School and graduated from University City High School in University City, Mo. She attended secretarial school in St. Louis, and worked in the accounting department at Famous Barr department store. She often mentioned how much she enjoyed “life in the big city” as a working woman in the 1940s.

In 1946, Rosemary married George Warne in University City and moved to Oak Ridge, where they raised their four children. Rosemary and George were founding members of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, where they were active for more than 65 years. Rosemary was a member and past president of the Catholic Women’s Club. Clifford Ray Bolton

Ray Clifford Bolton, age 73, of Harriman, passed away Saturday, Feb. 15, 2014, at his home.

He was born Jan. 8, 1941, in Lafollette, the son of Birdie McKinley Bolton and Georgia Jones Bolton, who have both preceded him in death.

Mr. Bolton was a 1959 graduate of Fairmont West High School in Kettering, Ohio. He retired from the U.S. Navy, where he was a cryptologic technician senior chief. After he retired from the military, he obtained an associate degree from Excelsior College in Albany, N.Y., and worked as a registered nurse at the Methodist Medical Center and Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary. He later went to Utah, where he was a forester with the national park system. He enjoyed forestry, nature, and traveling. [Read more…]

Victor Paul Connelly, age 50, of Knoxville, passed away Thursday, Feb. 13, 2014 at Tennova North Medical Center in Powell.

He was born Jan. 5, 1964, in Chattanooga.

Victor was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He enjoyed playing golf, football, basketball, and waterskiing. One of his greatest pleasures in life was being around his family and people in general; he had nicknames for everyone he knew.

James Wesley Peel, 75, of Oak Ridge passed away Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2014, at his home.

The funeral service was held Friday at 11 a.m. at Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home with Pastor Steve McDonald officiating. A receiving of friends was held prior to the service from 10 to 11 a.m. at the funeral home.

Burial will be at the Old Coker Creek Cemetery on Highway 68 in Tellico Plains.

David Edward Daniels Sr., age 37, a resident of Clinton, passed away Sunday, Feb. 16, 2014, at his home.

David was born Nov. 14, 1976, in Columbia City, Ind. He and his family moved to Tennessee during his early childhood.

David worked as a builder of both residential and commercial construction. In his spare time, he enjoyed spending time with his family and fishing.

Fred Campbell

Fred Campbell, of Oak Ridge, passed away Friday, Feb. 14, 2014, at his home.

The son of the late Ida Mae and Samuel Elliot Campbell of Fulton, Ky., Fred was born May 8, 1926. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Paris, Dean and James Campbell.

A 50-year resident of Oak Ridge, he lived most recently at Greenfield of Oak Ridge. There, he was lovingly cared for by his wife, Patty Glover Campbell, during the decline of his health in recent years, following open heart surgery, from which he never fully recovered.

At the age of 18, he went into military service in World War II and served as a scout in the U.S. Army in European campaigns in Germany and Austria. At the end of the war, his unit entered a German prison camp on the second day after its liberation. [Read more…]

Beverly Ann Owens Grubb

Beverly Ann Owens Grubb, age 76, of Oak Ridge, passed away Saturday, Feb. 15, 2014, at the Methodist Medical Center.

She was born July 9, 1937, in Middlesboro, Ky., the daughter of Paul Henry Owens Sr. and Emma Opal Turner Owens.

Beverly was a 1955 graduate of Oak Ridge High School, and she attended Knoxville Business College. She retired from Martin Marietta Energy Systems, where she was a secretary at the K-25 and Y-12 plants. Beverly sang with the Sweet Adeline’s in the 1970s, and she bowled on several area leagues. Her greatest passions were her children, grandchildren, and family. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by William Joseph Grubb, on June 7, 2004. [Read more…]
