The Oak Ridge Community Band/Wind Ensemble has its last indoor concert of the 2017-2018 series on Sunday. It’s the “April Showers” show at Oak Ridge High School.
The concert starts at 3:30 p.m. Sunday in the Oak Ridge High School Performing Arts Center.
The summer season of outdoor concerts begins on Memorial Day, a press release said.
The Sunday performance promises to be exceptional, featuring a variety of songs including Hoagy Carmichael’s “Star Dust,” featuring trumpet soloist Kim Kasten; Leonard Bernstein’s “Highlights of West Side Story”; Alfred Reed’s exciting “Punchinello”; and James Curnow’s lovely “Cherry Tree” from his “Appalachian Dances,” the press release said. Other numbers on Sunday’s program will be Jean Sibelius’s “Finlandia,” John Clifford Heed’s “In Storm and Sunshine,” and Leroy Anderson’s “Belle of the Ball.”
Kasten will be featured trumpet soloist when the band performs Hoagy Carmichael’s beautiful “Star Dust.” Kasten, a Community Band member for more than 40 years, played in the ORHS band under Steve “Doc” Combs, studied trumpet with Ed Neidens at the University of Tennessee, and has played with numerous area bands including the Dixieland Band, The Back Door Band, Jack Russell and the Terriers, and with big bands Music Crafters, the Favorites, Little Big Band, the Cavaliers, the Al Curtis Orchestra, the Jim Colgrove Band, and Boys Night Out. Kasten has also performed with the Ringling Brothers and Shrine Circus bands when they were in Knoxville, the press release said.
Admission to Sunday afternoon’s concert is $5 for adults over age 18 and free for children. For more information, visit www.orcb.org or call (865) 483-3044. Also, the public can follow the band on Facebook at www.facebook.com/OakRidgeCommunityBand.
