State authorities have identified the person shot and killed during a struggle with a deputy in Marlow on Saturday as Randall Kyle Wilcox, 30, of Clinton.
However, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is providing no new details about the shooting, including the type of weapon involved and the nature of the injuries to an Anderson County Sheriff’s Department deputy.
“I am unable to provide any more details at this stage of the investigation,” said Kristin Helm, TBI public information officer.
Wilcox was shot by the Anderson County deputy near 602 Pine Ridge Road on Saturday morning after he reportedly fled on foot from a traffic stop and then tried to take the deputy’s weapon during a confrontation, authorities said Saturday.
Anderson County Chief Deputy Mark Lucas said the Sheriff’s Department is not naming the deputy. He was injured and taken by ambulance to Methodist Medical Center in Oak Ridge, where he was treated and released.
The injuries were not believed to be serious, Helm said.
The deputy had stopped Wilcox’s car at about 10:22 a.m. Saturday. Lucas said Wilcox pulled into a driveway, jumped from the car, and fled.
“The deputy gave chase and a short distance later was confronted by the suspect, where a struggle ensued with the suspect trying to take the deputy’s duty weapon,” Lucas said. “The suspect was shot and killed.â€
He said Anderson County District Attorney Dave Clark was notified, and the TBI was asked to investigate, which is standard when an officer is involved in a shooting.
Helm said the investigation is “open and ongoing,” and the results will be turned over to Clark when the investigation is completed.
Authorities haven’t said why the deputy stopped Wilcox, but Helm said it was for a non-moving violation. Wilcox had a lengthy arrest record that includes 20 arrests dating back to 2000, including for carjacking, aggravated assault, and aggravated burglary, according to county records and the Sheriff’s Department.
In a Monday morning e-mail, Lucas said Wilcox was wanted on three outstanding arrest warrants, two for contempt of court and one for failure to appear.
Saturday’s shooting was the second fatal one involving Anderson County deputies this year. A Feb. 29 shooting involved deputies Jonathan “Adam” Bryant and Cpl. James Daniel “J.D.” Powell, and it also was investigated by the TBI.
The two suspects in that case, Shana Lee Richardson and Michael Joseph Baker, were reportedly armed and traveling into Anderson County in a truck reported stolen in Indiana. They had allegedly stolen fuel in Lake City, were under the influence of synthetic cathinone or “bath salts,” had fled from officers, and fired or threatened to fire at deputies on Old Emory Road, near the Claxton Volunteer Fire Department, Clark wrote in a Sept. 10 report.
The deputies had little choice but to use deadly force, Clark said. Its use was “actually consistent with Anderson County Sheriff’s Department training and commonly accepted law enforcement standards in similar situations,” Clark said.
