Roane State Winter Concert is Saturday at O’Brien Theatre

It’s a longstanding tradition at Roane State and a great way to celebrate the holiday season.

The annual Winter Concert featuring all of the college’s music department ensembles will be held at 7 p.m. on Saturday, December 9, in the O’Brien Theatre on the Harriman campus, and everyone is invited, said a press release from Roane State Community College.

“All donations collected at the door will help support the Roane State music programs, including our 2018 summer choir tour to Italy,” music department professor Brenda Luggie said.

“This is one of our main on-campus concerts for the season,” she said.

Featured will be the Celebration Singers, Concert Choir, Jazz Band, Stage Band, and Bluegrass Band.

Each group performs at least three songs on the program, all tied together by a winter and holiday theme, Luggie said.

“For example, this year the Concert Choir will perform songs featured in holiday movies,” she said.

The culmination of the concert is traditionally a collaborative piece involving the choirs and bands. “This year’s concert-ender is a medley from ‘The Polar Express,’ so we strongly encourage the whole family to come join us for the performance,” Luggie said.

She said the event usually lasts about an hour and will include solos and duets from students who have been chosen from auditions.

While the concert has been held in the Princess Theatre in Harriman in the past, “our 2017 schedule allowed us to go back to the O’Brien Theatre, where we can spread out our expanding instrumental ensembles,” Luggie said.

Luggie organizes the program and directs both choral ensembles, while the bands are directed by Geol Greenlee, Chris Metcalfe, and Harold Nagge.
