The Children’s Museum of Oak Ridge is featuring clay and the arts in its fall classes for the general public, for homeschoolers, and for Girl Scouts.
A four-week Clay Sampler, for ages 7-11 and open to the public and homeschoolers, will offer hand-building and wheel work, surface and finishing techniques, then glazing as students prepare their pieces for the kiln, a press release said. The first session, with a Halloween theme, is from 1:30-3:30 p.m. on Wednesdays on October 4, 18, and 25, and November 1. The second session, with a Holiday theme, will be on Wednesdays on November 8, 15, and 29, and December 6. Cost for the four-week class is $80 for members and $85 for non-members.
Clay Holiday Decorations will be a one-time class from 10:30-11:30 a.m. Saturday, November 18. Students will create a personalized holiday ornament and glaze it, to be picked up two weeks after the class. The class is open to all ages, and those under seven years old must have an adult present. Class fee is $15 for members and $20 for non-members.

The Children’s Museum is also offering several classes to support homeschool students. Call the Children’s Museum at least two weeks in advance to schedule a class. These classes are:
- Clay Experience, ages 5-10 and adults, either at 11-11:45 a.m. or 1-1:45 p.m. Students will create a clay piece, apply underglaze and have the piece fired. Dates to choose from for the one-day class are Thursdays on October 5, 12, 19, or 26, and November 2, 9, or 16. Fee is $10 for members and $15 for non-members.
- Find Your Way with Clay, ages 13 and older and adults, from 12:30-2:30 p.m. Students will explore hand-building and wheel techniques as they make tiles, slab mugs, and coil bowls. The four-week class will be offered on Fridays, October 6, 13, 20, and 27, with a Halloween theme, and on Fridays, November 3, 17, and December 1 and 8, with a holiday theme. Cost is $80 for members and $85 for non-members.
- Meet the Masters, ages 5-10, from 1:30-3:30 p.m. Thursdays, November 2, 9, 16, and 30. Students will discover the wonders of art through the eyes of some artistic masters, including Mimi Knight, Pablo Picasso, Frida Kahlo, and Mary Cassat. They will explore portraiture, symbolism, and composition, ending the class with an art show at the museum. Fee is $80 for members and $85 for non-members.
Girl Scouts have opportunities to earn two badges at the Children’s Museum. They are:
- Pottery Badge for Brownies and Daisies, from 1-3 p.m. on Saturday, October 7. Scouts will learn two clay building techniques, hand-building and slab, also create a pinch pot and tile, and paint with underglaze. They will also find pottery in the museum and see how it is used. Fee is $14 for members and $19 for non-members.
- Jewelry Badge for Juniors, 1-3 p.m. Saturday, October 21. Scouts will go on a scavenger hunt to find jewelry in the Museum’s exhibits, make a pendant with a “caged” stone, design and make a shell necklace, create a Claddagh-style ring and make a piece of jewelry for a friend. Fee is $15 for members and $20 for non-members.
The Children’s Museum, offering children and families the opportunity for learning through play, is open from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, 1-4 p.m. Sunday. Museum admission is $8 for adults, $7 for seniors ages 62 and older, and $6 for children ages 3-18. Admission is free for children under 3 and museum members.
