The Oak Ridge Community Band has its last outdoor concert of the summer at 7 p.m. Monday, Labor Day, in Alvin K. Bissell Park. There is no admission fee, and everyone is encouraged to bring chairs or blankets for outdoor seating, a press release said. To make things even “sweeter,” Razzleberry’s Ice Cream Lab will be in the park to provide cool refreshments, the press release said.

Along with the concert programs handed out at the tables around the performing pavilion, audience members can also pick up brochures outlining the Community Band’s 2017-2018 indoor concert season with performances scheduled from October through April. And as an extra bonus, tickets for free admission to the October 8 concert will be also be available.

Among the highlights of the Community Band’s Labor Day program will be the clarinet section’s performance of Wim Laseroms’s fast-paced “Claribelle,” the tubas and flutes in Henry Mancini’s “Baby Elephant Walk,” and the trombone section in Henry Fillmore’s “Ham Trombone.”

Clarinetist Lynlee Robinson will be soloist in Warren Barker’s arrangement of “Blue Moon,” and vocalist Deidre Ford will sing the lyrics of Michael Brown’s arrangement of “I Dreamed A Dream” from “Les Miserables.” Also, making a return visit to the Community Band will be vocalist Roscoe Shipley who will sing a stirring rendition of John Stafford Smith’s “Star-Spangled Banner—A Symphonic Portrait.” Chuck Landguth will be the narrator for Monday evening’s program.

Another highlight of Monday evening’s concert will be a tribute to Tennessee with Jay Dawson’s arrangement of “Tennessee Salute,” which includes a number of tunes special to Tennesseans including “Wabash Cannonball,” “Chattanooga Choo, Choo,” The Tennessee Waltz,” and of course “Rocky Top!”

The Oak Ridge Community Band directed by Dale Pendley will become the Oak Ridge Wind Ensemble when it begins its indoor concert season at the Oak Ridge High School Performing Arts Center on October 8, the press release said. Rehearsals for the October 8 concert will begin on Thursday evening, September 7, and interested area musicians who would like to join the band can visit www.orcb.org or call (865) 483-3044 for more information.

More information will be added as it becomes available.
