Barbershop Harmony Society presents ‘I’m Going South’ at Grove Theater in September

A show in Oak Ridge in September will feature the Southern Harmony Brigade chorus and other singers.

The show is titled “I’m Goin’ South,” and it will be presented by the Greater Knoxville Chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society.

The show is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. Saturday, September 9, in the Historic Grove Theater in Oak Ridge.

The show was announced by the Smokyland Sound Barbershop Harmony Chapter.

The Historic Grove Theater is located at 123 Randolph Road in Grove Center.

The feature chorus will be members of the Southern Harmony Brigade, a select group of the most experienced Barbershop Harmony singers representing about three dozen chapters of the Sunshine, Carolinas, and Dixie Districts of the Harmony Society (the latter formerly known as SPEBSQSA). At the show, the Brigade chorus will sing at least one-fourth of the concert as the headliner chorus. The occasion for their being in Oak Ridge is for the members to attend their annual convention meeting and rally, which always includes preparing, presenting, and contributing to a show like this.

A district champion quartet will also be a guest performer, sharing the limelight in the second half with the Brigade chorus. They are the current Sunshine (Florida) District champions (2016); “Rooftop Records” is well known and appreciated for its quality of performance among barbershoppers worldwide. Those who are interested to preview a few tunes by “Rooftop Records” may check them out with YouTube videos linked from the Smokyland Sound Chapter website. They placed in the top 12 among international competitive quartets last year, and 17th the year before.

In addition to the headliners, the show event will also be a joint effort of three other chorus organizations plus four other quartets (for a total of nine performing groups). The headliners are: The Southern Harmony Brigade chorus (about 50 performers), and the “Rooftop Records” quartet, mentioned above, plus:

• a BBS chorus of two combined chapters, one local to Knoxville (Smokyland Sound) and one from far East Tennessee (Bristol and Kingsport area) called the “Appalachian Express Chorus.”
• The “Foothills Sound Youth Chorus”, a group of young men (high school and college age) from the Knoxville area.  You can find video tracks by them on You Tube.
• Two quartets from the young men’s chorus, named “865” and “Brickyard”.
• Two older men’s quartets from the local area: Collector’s Edition and Rocky Toppers.

The locals will sing first and the latter half of the Oak Ridge program will be musical “sets” by the headliners, plus a grand finale of all the performers together, putting as many as 100 singers on stage.

Tickets will be sold at two different price levels: $18 regular price; and a discount of $3 per ticket for seniors, students and groups of 10 or more.  Tickets are available three different ways:  by telephone order, by advance purchase from one of the barbershop singer performers, or at the entrance box office on performance night (on a space available basis).
