The Anderson County Commission picked teacher Tyler Mayes on Monday to serve as interim Anderson County Circuit Court Clerk through August 2014.
Mayes, 28, was one of four nominees considered during the Monday morning meeting, although there had been more candidates earlier, Anderson County Commission Chair Chuck Fritts said.
Mayes was appointed in the second of two votes, and he was sworn in immediately after his appointment, Fritts said. Mayes replaces longtime clerk Barry Pellizari, who retired Sunday, and he will serve through the next county election.
Fritts said the other three candidates were Anderson County District 2 Commissioner Mark Alderson, criminal justice student Amy Gray, and Darline Loy, Anderson County Circuit Court chief deputy clerk.
A candidate needed eight votes to be appointed. Mayes received seven on the first round of voting, Alderson collected four, Loy two, and Gray one, Fritts said.
During the second round, Mayes received eight votes, Alderson four, and Loy two.
Mayes will have a salary around $73,000, Fritts said.
Elected to a four-year term, the clerk maintains court trial schedules and four separate office locations, employs 20 deputy clerks, files more than 20,000 new cases each year, and on average collects and disburses $4 million annually.
