Four East Tennessee students have been selected to participate in a special master class with celebrated concert violinist Rachel Barton Pine on Friday.
The master class is from 3-5 p.m. Friday, March 31, at the Oak Ridge High School Performing Arts Center. It’s part of a series of concerts and outreach activities featuring Pine and presented by the Oak Ridge Civic Music Association.
Kate Hausladen is a 15-year-old sophomore at Oak Ridge High School. She began playing violin at the age of four, studying with Oak Ridge Symphony Orchestra violist Susan Shor, and has been studying with Karen Kartal for the past six years. She has been a member of the Knoxville Symphony Youth Orchestra Association since 2010, and she has played in the Youth Orchestra for the past two years. She has been chosen to play in the Youth Aliyah annual concert in Oak Ridge several times and was selected to the All East and All State orchestras in 2016.
Hausladen is also a competitive soccer player and was All State for the 300-meter hurdles in 2016.
She will perform “Rondo,” the last movement in “Symphonie Espagnole” by Edouard Lalo.
Michael Ma is a senior at Oak Ridge High School. He has played the violin for 10 years, and he currently studies with Karen Kartal. He also studied with Susan Shor. He is currently concertmaster of the Oak Ridge High School Orchestra and plays violin in the Knoxville Symphony Youth Orchestra. In 2015, Michael had the honor of attending the Governor’s School for the Arts for violin. He has also participated in two All State orchestras.
Ma will perform selections from “Romanian Dances” by Bela Bartok.
Sidney Matlock, a 15-year-old violinist, is an honors student in the 10th grade at Webb School of Knoxville. A student of Karen Kartal, she has been a consistent finalist in the Ralph Einstein Youth Aliyah Concert competition since 2007. In 2010, Matlock received the Youth Aliyah Award for the Highest Score among all competing age groups. In 2012, she was a featured soloist with the Oak Ridge Symphony Orchestra as part of the Family Concert series.
Matlock is currently a member and first violinist of the Knoxville Symphony Youth Orchestra, where she has also served as principal second. She is also a member of the 2016 and 2017 Tennessee All East and Tennessee All State Orchestra.
Matlock has recently been admitted to the Brevard Music Center in Brevard, North Carolina, during the summer of 2017 for six weeks of intensive music study and performance. She will perform “Zigeunerweisen” by Pablo de Sarasate.
Hannah Shipstad, an eighth-grade student at Farragut Middle School, has been a student of Oak Ridge Symphony Orchestra Concertmaster Karen Kartal since she was six years old. She has been a finalist in the Youth Aliyah competition five times and has performed in the Youth Aliyah annual concert in Oak Ridge. Two years ago, as the winner the Youth Aliyah competition, Shipstad was a special guest violinist with the Oak Ridge Symphony Orchestra.
Shipstad has been a member of the Knoxville Symphony Youth Orchestra for seven years and is currently the assistant concertmaster in the Youth Chamber Orchestra. She has performed with the Sequoyah Suzuki Strings for many years. In addition, she has played at the Oak Ridge Civic Music Association’s Rock to Bach Musical Festival and at the University of Tennessee Music Festivals.
She will perform the first movement of “Concerto No. 9 in A minor” by Charles de Beriot.

Metal-Rock Concert:
Classical violinist Rachel Barton Pine shows off her versatility with a metal-rock concert at the Oak Ridge High School Performing Arts Center on Thursday, March 30, at 7 p.m. The nationally recognized Oak Ridge High School Orchestra will perform selections at the beginning of the concert before Ms. Pine takes the stage with string players from the Oak Ridge Symphony Orchestra. Pine and members of the orchestra will perform popular selections by Led Zeppelin, Rush, AC/DC, Black Sabbath, and more.

Dvorak Violin Concerto with the Oak Ridge Symphony Orchestra:
Pine will perform Dvorak’s “Violin Concerto” with the Oak Ridge Symphony Orchestra on Saturday, April 1, at 7:30 p.m. at the Oak Ridge High School Performing Arts Center. Led by Maestro Dan Allcott, the orchestra will also perform music by Vaughan Williams, Sibelius, and Smetana. Audience members are invited to bid on delightful items at a spring-themed silent auction in the lobby. A reception will be held after the concert.  This concert is made possible with the generous support of UT-Battelle, the press release said.

American Partitas:
Violinist Rachel Barton Pine will perform a solo recital on Sunday, April 2, at 3 p.m. at the Pollard Auditorium in Oak Ridge. Pine will perform “American Partitas,†a recital program of newly commissioned works by David Wallace Bruce Molsky, April Verch, Darol Anger, Billy Childs, and Daniel Bernard Roumain partnered with the Bach Partitas for solo violin.

An elegant dinner with Rachel Barton Pine will follow the concert in the lobby of the Pollard Auditorium. Catered by Bidwell Catering, the menu will feature maple syrup and brown sugar glazed pork loin, pasta primavera, herb roasted potatoes, sautéed zucchini and squash, and mixed berry cobbler.
