Author Mascaro to speak at Roane State Oak Ridge campus March 1

Knoxville area author Marilyn Mascaro will be the featured speaker at the new Arts and Lectures series at Roane State’s Oak Ridge campus.

Mascaro—an educator, writer, traveler, and East Tennessee native—will discuss her latest book, “Surviving History: The Life of B.Y. Harris in East Tennessee.”

It’s described as “creative non-fiction” and is about a relative who fought in the Civil War.

The event will be held in the Oak Ridge City Room (A111) at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 1. Mascaro will be introduced by DeAnna Stephens, a Roane State assistant professor of English and humanities. Stephens organized the new Arts and Lectures series, titled “Writers at Roane State.”

The intent of the series is to showcase a diverse selection of writers, particularly among the Roane State community, “and nurture dialogue about a variety of topics,” Stephens said.

Mascaro has a bachelor’s degree in education and a master’s degree in English from the University of Tennessee. She has published poems in “Bloodroot,” a publication of Kentucky’s Southeast Community College, “ABZ: A New Magazine of Poetry,” and Roane State’s “Caney Creek Sampler.”

Her essays have been published in The Oak Ridger and Discover Grainger County.

Mascaro was raised by a Civil War buff, and as a child she toured the Gettysburg, Shiloh, and Fort Sumter battlegrounds. At age 12, she pronounced the sites “boring,” but she later became fascinated by Civil War events.

“Surviving History” blends documented information with creative elements, according to a description of the book.
