The Oak Ridge and Campbell County girls’ basketball teams are both undefeated in District 3-AAA, and the two teams will play today.
One team will remain undefeated, and the other will pick up its first district loss of the season.
Oak Ridge, ranked number seven in the first Class AAA poll of 2017, is 14-2 overall and 6-0 in District 3-AAA.
Campbell County is 13-4 and 6-0 in District 3-AAA.
Both teams were also undefeated in the district when they met for the first time last season, at home on January 12. The Lady Wildcats won that one, 47-31.
Oak Ridge also beat Campbell County two more times last season. The second time was during the regular season, a 47-32 victory at Campbell County on February 12, and the last time was in the District 3-AAA championship at Anderson County High School in Clinton on February 23. That was a 52-34 win.
Campbell County only lost two district games last season and both were to Oak Ridge.
The Lady Wildcats went on to finish as Class AAA state runner-up in 2016, losing in the state championship game 68-36 to Riverdale.
The Lady Cougars were eliminated by Hardin Valley, 44-41, in a Region 2-AAA game.
Oak Ridge was the top seed in the District 3-AAA playoffs last year, and Campbell County was second. The two teams lead the district again this year. Powell (10-6, 5-2) is third.
The girls’ game starts at 6 p.m. today (Tuesday, January 10) at Campbell County High School at 150 Cougar Lane in Jacksboro.
The Oak Ridge boys (13-2, 6-0 District 3-AAA) also play today. The Campbell County boys (12-6, 2-4) aren’t as high in the district standings as the girls. The Campbell County boys have lost to three teams that Oak Ridge has defeated: Anderson County, Karns, and Powell. But like Oak Ridge, they’ve beaten Central and Clinton.
The Oak Ridge boys, ranked number two in the first Class AAA poll of 2017, are the only undefeated team in District 3-AAA. The two closest competitors are Karns (12-2, 6-1) and Powell (12-4, 5-2).
The boys’ game begins at 7:30 p.m. today.
More information will be added as it becomes available.
