Jasper Clarence “J.C.” Scarbrough

Jasper Clarence “J.C.” Scarbrough, age 94, of Clinton, and formerly of Oak Ridge, went home to be with our Lord on Monday, Sept. 3, at the home of his daughter, Mary Hackworth.

He was born March 25, 1918, in Harriman, the son of Franklin and Roxie Ova Farr Scarbrough.

Mr. Scarbrough was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army. He was a member of the 4th Infantry, which was one of the first motorized units. His unit was one of the first to land on D-Day at Omaha Beach.

Mr. Scarbrough retired after 35 years with Home Beneficial Life Insurance Company, where he was an Insurance Manager. He was a longtime member of Central Baptist Church and had served the church as deacon, choir member, and in the Caring Center and as Sunday School teacher. He was a lifetime member of the Lions Club and had been active in the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Anderson County.

Mr. Scarbrough also served on the Oak Ridge School Board for 12 years and served as chairman of the board.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Melverda Scarbrough on April 30, 2000.

He is survived by son, Mark Scarbrough of Knoxville; daughters, Joyce LeTellier and husband Bob of Oak Ridge, Mary Hackworth and husband Dennis of Clinton, and Janet Schumpert of Oak Ridge; brother, Willard Scarbrough and wife Faye of Harriman; seven grandchildren, Michael Dixon and wife Claudia, serving with the U.S. Army in Kentucky, Melanie Butler and husband Greg of Virginia Beach, Va., Jennifer Scarbrough of Washington, D.C., Andy Hackworth and Rocky Hackworth and wife Kasey , all of Powell, Joshua Fry and Benjamin Schumpert, both of Oak Ridge; and four great-grandchildren, Silas Jasper Dixon, Hadley Grace Hackworth, Matthew Alexander Butler, and Olivia Grace Butler. His fifth great-grandchild, Hayden Tyler Hackworth, is due to arrive at the the end of September.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, Sept. 6, 2012 from 5–7 p.m. at Central Baptist Church of Oak Ridge. The funeral will follow at 7 p.m. with Rev. Glenn Ellis officiating.

A graveside service will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. Full military honors will be provided by the Volunteer State War Era Honor Guard.

The family asks that any memorials be made to the Caring Center of Central Baptist Church, 130 Providence Road, Oak Ridge, TN 37830.
