Longtime Oak Ridger Kathy Moore has announced that she is running for one of eight seats on the Anderson County Charter Commission, a press release said.
Moore supports term limits. The press release said term limits would give more people an opportunity to participate in local government as candidates and as board members.
Moore said she wants to use her experiences to serve as the representative from the Eighth District. That district includes the Emory Valley, Hendrix Creek, and Woodland voting precincts.
“As a lifelong Oak Ridger with experience in both city and county government, I believe I can provide knowledgeable input into the charter process,” Moore said. “A charter has worked well for the City of Oak Ridge, ensuring that citizens are an active part of our government. I want the same for Anderson County in order to move us forward.”
Moore said she has spent a lifetime focusing on the future and the next generations, and she thinks it is imperative that the county focus on a way to engage the leaders of tomorrow.
“When I served on county commission, one of my fellow commissioners believed commissioners should only serve on certain boards for two years, giving others a chance,” Moore said in the press release. “He also believed in term limits. I agreed with him then, and I still do today.”
Moore’s father came to work in Oak Ridge when she was four, and she has spent 73 years being an active part of the Oak Ridge community, the press release said. From coaching youth basketball and softball to working with the Lions Club as they helped people detect and treat diseases of the eye, to her past service on the board of the Boys and Girls Club, and Kiwanis of Oak Ridge, Moore has spent a lifetime engaged with Oak Ridge with a focus on next generations and the future, the release said.
Moore’s history includes her election to the Oak Ridge School Board, as well as to City Council, where she was elected mayor. Moore was also elected to serve on County Commission.
Moore has served on the Municipal Technical Advisory Service-MTAS board, as well as the Tennessee Advisory Commission (TACIR) Board, giving her great insight into the operations of government at the state and local level, the press release said.
Moore and her husband Dan Tuxbury attend Calvary Baptist Church.
Voters will elect one charter commissioner per district to the eight-member Charter Commission.
Early voting begins October 19 and ends November 3. The election is Tuesday, November 8.
