The Tennessee Valley Authority is celebrating the 80th anniversary of Norris Dam with a food, family-friendly fun, music, and self-guided tours of Norris Dam.
“It’ll be a birthday party to remember…and TVA is giving away all of the presents!” a press release said.
The party is scheduled from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, July 29 and 30, at the dam.
No reservations or tickets are required, and admission is free.
“Come bring your family and friends for an experience to remember,” the press release said.

Free parking at Museum of Appalachia: For the convenience of our guests, free parking is available at the Museum of Appalachia, located just east of I-75 in Clinton, at 2819 Andersonville Highway in Clinton. Shuttles will run continuously throughout the day. To ensure the safety of all attending, no parking will be allowed at Norris Dam.
Fun activities abound: For the young or the young-at-heart, multiple fun activities are available, ranging from “fishing for worms” at the aquarium exhibit to a nature coloring station to exploration of a TVA transmission truck. On Saturday morning, the Knoxville Track Club sponsors a sanctioned 8.0K race across the dam and back, along with a more leisurely two-mile “fun walk” along Songbird Trail.
Make learning fun: Our educational booths promise both fun and unusual activities. For example, at the archeological booth, children can learn to throw a prehistoric spear called an atlatl. TVA’s own Dr. Energy will give live performances. We’ll have exhibits for identifying animal tracks, explanations about recycling, and other activities for all ages. And the birthday girl herself, Norris Dam, will be open for the rare opportunity for self-guided tours.
Heat-busters: Worried about the heat? We’ve got you covered—in more ways than one. After boarding our air-conditioned shuttle buses, every attendee receives a free collapsible water bottle at our Welcome Center on the dam grounds. A hydration station is set up at the celebration site for refillable water options, and cooling misters will also take the edge off the summer temperatures.
Treats for your ears: Tap your foot, sing along, or feel free to dance to our musicians playing at multiple locations around the site. From John Alvis & Group to Matt Foster to the Teno Family, the sounds of Appalachia will remind guests of the rich musical heritage of the area.
Food available for purchase: Some of Knoxville’s most recognizable food trucks will be on hand with a variety of tasty offerings from hot dogs to sliders, barbecue, to veggie burgers. But, be sure to save room for the cool ice cream.
