An Oak Ridge nonprofit organization has received a $35,000 federal grant to help fight homelessness, officials said Thursday.
The Emergency Solutions Grant was awarded to the Trinity Outreach Center of Hope, or TORCH, the Tennessee Housing Development Agency, or THDA, said in a press release. TORCH will use the grant to help fight homelessness among high-risk populations in Anderson County and surrounding areas.
The funds will be used to help with administrative services, street outreach, prevention, and rapid rehousing services that will help homeless people and families in the area covered by TORCH, the press release said.
It said cities, counties, and nonprofit organizations in Tennessee are eligible to apply for the funds through a competitive grant process administered by THDA. Trinity Outreach Center of Hope was one of 37 recipients of Emergency Solutions Grant funding statewide in the Spring 2016 competitive grant process. Each grant recipient is required to put up matching funds.
THDA dispersed a total of $2.8 million among successful applicants.
ESG funds provide facilities capital as well as essential social services, street outreach, rapid rehousing assistance, and Homeless Management Information Systems in non-metro areas. Chattanooga, Knoxville, Memphis, and Nashville-Davidson County are not eligible to compete for ESG funds because they already receive their own Community Development Block Grant funds directly from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, the press release said.
