The Babcock and Wilcox Company has awarded Knoxville student Rob Jones a college scholarship worth $1,500 per year for up to four years, a press release said.
The scholarship is one of 12 awarded each year to students whose parents work in B&W’s offices, including sites in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and Ontario, Canada, the release said.
Jones is the son of Kelley and Steve Jones. Steve is a geologist in the Environmental Compliance organization at the Y-12 National Security Complex. B&W is one of the parent companies of B&W Y-12, the company that operates Y-12.
A 2012 Bearden High School graduate, Jones attends Tennessee Technological University and plans to major in mechanical engineering. He has been interested in that field since his freshman year of high school, when he became a devoted follower of the Discovery Channel’s “MythBusters,” a documentary series that scientifically explores questionable stories of engineering feats, the release said.
“Some episodes prove that what seems to be impossible can actually be done,” it said.
The release said Jones is a National Merit Scholar and an Eagle Scout. Before leaving home for college, he was active in his church’s youth group and went on several mission trips sponsored by his church.
He played trombone in Bearden High School’s band throughout high school and was selected during his junior and senior years to participate in All-State East Senior Clinic sponsored by the East Tennessee School Band and Orchestra Association. At Tennessee Tech, Jones is a member of the Golden Eagles marching band.
The release said B&W scholarships are awarded based on academic achievement and potential, the relevance of the student’s course of study to the company’s business, and financial need. Applicants’ grades, test scores, extracurricular activities, written essay submissions, and guidance counselor recommendations are evaluated.
