MARLOW—Three people were injured in two crashes on Oliver Springs Highway in Marlow on Thursday.
One vehicle overturned in the first crash, which occurred overnight, and two vehicles came close to going into a pond into the second, which happened Thursday afternoon.
The first crash was reported at about 12:13 a.m. Thursday. Bobbie Lane, 47, of Clinton, was driving west in a 1999 Toyota 4Runner on Highway 61, also known as Oliver Springs Highway, when she failed to maintain control and went off the right side of the road, went over a curb, and hit a tree, which caused the vehicle to overturn, the Tennessee Highway Patrol said.
Lane was injured, the THP said. She was not wearing a seatbelt, authorities said.
Lane was not charged in the crash, which was reported near Marlow Circle and Anderson Memorial Gardens. The 4Runner was reported to be on its top.
In the second crash, Roy Elden Vickery, 84, of Clinton, was stopped in a 2009 Toyota Corolla at the intersection of Highway 61 and Pine Ridge Road when he turned into the path of a 1998 Buick Century being driven west on Oliver Springs Highway by Norman Eugene Orth, 50, of Oliver Springs, according to the THP.
The Buick Century driven by Orth hit the Toyota Corolla driven by Vickery in the right-side center, the THP said.
Both vehicles went off the right side of the road and came to a stop over an steep embankment in a small body of standing water, authorities said.
“Both vehicles were within inches from going into a pond,” said Terry Allen, chief of the Anderson County Rescue Squad. “This was very close to being disastrous.”
The crash was reported at about 4:03 p.m. Thursday.
Allen thanked the Anderson County Rescue Squad, Marlow Volunteer Fire Department, and Anderson County Sheriff’s Department for their quick response.
The THP said Vickery was taken to the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville. He was wearing a seatbelt but was injured.
Orth was taken to Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. He was also wearing a seatbelt, but he was also injured.
Vickery was charged with failing to yield the right of way, the THP said.
