There is a 20 percent chance of snow showers after 1 a.m. Wednesday, and snow is likely before 3 p.m. Wednesday, forecasters said.
A new snow accumulation of one to three inches is possible in Oak Ridge, according to the National Weather Service in Morristown.
The forecast calls for a 70 percent chance of precipitation on Wednesday, with snow likely, followed by a mix of rain and snow.
A winter weather advisory is in effect from 4 a.m. to 10 p.m. Wednesday as a fast-moving storm system is expected to bring one to two inches of snow across the area by Wednesday evening, the NWS said.
“Areas north of Interstate 40 will likely stay all snow, but the southern (Tennessee) Valley may switch over to sleet/freezing rain by early afternoon and then all rain by late afternoon,” the winter weather advisory said. Anderson County is north of Interstate 40. Part of Roane County is north of I-40, and part of it is south of the interstate.
Higher elevations may get up to three inches of snow before it tapers off Wednesday evening, forecasters said.
“Light snow may linger into the overnight hours on Wednesday, but little to no additional accumulation (is) expected,” the advisory said.
Among other counties, the winter weather advisory applies to Anderson, Campbell, Morgan, Roane, and Scott counties, and it includes the cities of Clinton, Kingston, and Oak Ridge.
Forecasters said temperatures will warm on Wednesday, causing the snow to switch over to a wintry mix of son and freezing rain and sleet before turning to mostly rain by late afternoon.
The low on Tuesday night is forecast at 19, with a calm wind and increasing clouds.
The high on Wednesday is forecast at near 33 under cloudy skies.
