Anderson County Board of Education Chair John Burrell announced at last week’s school board meeting that he has appointed a search committee to find the next director of schools. The next director will replace Larry Foster, who is retiring at the end of June.
The board voted unanimously to approve the makeup of the committee, which will be chaired by Gail Martin, who is also the committee’s representative for Claxton. Curtis Sexton will represent Rocky Top, while Glenda Langenberg will represent Oak Ridge. Jim Stewart will represent Clinton, Dail Cantrell will represent Andersonville/Norris, and Robert McKamey will serve as the representative for the Anderson County Commission, Dutch Valley, and Norwood.
The personnel committee will follow this timetable as they seek Foster’s replacement: From January 15 through the 31st, the position will be advertised in local newspapers; applications will be due by 4 p.m. on February 5.
After all the applications have been submitted, the search committee will review them and narrow the field to three to five candidates and submit them to the school board in time for its February 11 board meeting.
Candidates will be interviewed in an open session and finalists will be required to meet with various staff and community groups.
Foster, 64, has spent his 43-year career in Anderson County Schools, going from agriculture teacher to director of the 6,400-student system, according to the Knoxville News Sentinel. Foster, a Clinton resident, was hired in a 7-1 vote in 2009, and he will have been director for seven years when he steps down. There are more than 1,000 employees in the 17-school district.
More information will be added as it becomes available.
