The man who drove his sport utility vehicle off the boat ramp into Melton Hill Lake late Friday afternoon has been identified, authorities said.
He is Michael Ferguson, 54, of Joneva Street, the Knox County Sheriff’s Office said.
Witnesses told officers that he accelerated his vehicle as he headed toward the water, the Sheriff’s Office said. Divers with the Knox County Rescue Squad pulled his body from the submerged vehicle.
The KCSO Major Crimes Unit interviewed family and friends and determined it is probable suicide, the KCSO said.
“No note was found,” the Sheriff’s Office said.
The incident was reported shortly after 5 p.m. Friday, January 8, at Melton Hill Park in west Knox County, which is in the Hardin Valley area and southwest of Solway and across the Clinch River from Clark Center Park in Oak Ridge.
More information will be added as it becomes available.
