Junior guard Isaiah Sulack of Christian Academy of Knoxville set a single-game record with his nine three-point shots during the second game of the Arby’s Classic basketball tournament in Bristol on Saturday.
CAK beat Tabernacle Baptist of the Bahamas 71-44 behind a barrage of three-pointers to advance to play Taylor County, Kentucky, on Monday. That game starts at 8:30 p.m. Monday at Tennessee High School in Bristol.
Sulack, a 6’2†guard, came off the bench in the play-in game and finished with 39 points for the Warriors, a 6-5 Class AA team. He had 26 at the half.
The previous record for three-point shots was eight. Sulack broke it halfway through the third quarter on Saturday. CAK finished with 13 three-pointers total.
“Isaiah’s come off the bench all year,†CAK coach Shane Wells told the Bristol Herald Courier. “Instead of mixing things up when he came back from his injury, we started bringing him off the bench to provide an offensive lift. He shoots the ball really well. It’s his strength, obviously. He gives us a scoring punch off the bench.â€
The single-game scoring record of 52 points was set by Sullivan North’s Kenny Lawson in 1994.
CAK shot 24 of 44 (54.5 percent) from the field, compared to 17 of 51 (33.3 percent) for Tabernacle Baptist. The Warriors were 65 percent (13 of 20) from three-point range, compared to 3 of 17 for Tabernacle Baptist (17.6 percent)
The Falcons out-rebounded the Warriors, 32-20, with 14 offensive boards, compared to two for CAK.
Hunter Reynolds of CAK had 12 points, 10 assists, and three rebounds for the Warriors.
Cedric Delancy scored 13 points for the Falcons, and he had seven rebounds.
The Oak Ridge Wildcats will also play in the Arby’s Classic on Saturday (December 26). The Wildcats’ first game is against Dobyns-Bennett. It starts at 7 p.m., and it’s a rematch of a game played last week, when the Wildcats won 88-36.
Oak Ridge, a 14-0 Class AAA team, also has some consistent three-point shooters, including juniors Tajion Jones, who has 41 this season, and Tee Higgins, who has 29. The Wildcats hit 15 three-point shots at Gibbs on Tuesday, December 15, and had 12 more against Dobyns-Bennett on Friday, December 18.
