Oak Ridge sophomore post Mykia Dowdell led the Lady Wildcats with 18 points during a 49-32 win over Science Hill at home on Saturday.
The Oak Ridge defense held the Lady Hilltoppers to eight points in the first half, although the Lady Wildcats only managed to score 14 points of their own in the first two quarters.
But Oak Ridge (9-2, 5-0 District 3-AAA) scored twice as many points in the third quarter as Science Hill, 22-11, to take the win.
Lady Wildcats Coach Paige Green said she was a little frustrated at halftime with the low-scoring game. But on the other hand, the Oak Ridge defense had held the Lady Hilltoppers to just eight points, Green said.
“Our defense will be what will help us win games,” she said.
Freshman point guard Jada Guinn scored 12 points for the Wildcats, including several driving up the lane in the second half when she looked like she was going to pass it off to Dowdell but instead made a layup.
“Jada Guinn had a great game beating the press and making layups,” Green said.
Senior Caelyn Thompson also scored nine for Oak Ridge.
Science Hill (9-4, 1-1 District 1-AAA) was led by the 10 points of senior forward Hannah Rodgers and the eight points of junior forward Maddie Ratner.
It was the second day of the two-day Rick McGill Toyota Classic. The Lady Wildcats beat Dobyns-Bennett 42-34 on Friday.
“We’ve got to continue to build,” Green said. “These are teams that we would play in a sectional game.”
Oak Ridge is next scheduled to play Sequoyah, a 5-6 Class AA team, at 4 p.m. Monday, December 28, in the Lenoir City Christmas Tournament in Lenoir City.
