Thirteen technologies from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory have been selected as finalists for R&D 100 Awards, the annual technology prizes given by R&D Magazine. ORNL is lead developer in 10 of the technologies and a partner developer in another three technologies that made the finalist list.
R&D Magazine has changed the format of the annual awards substantially, with a list of finalists announced first. The competition also has new “Market Disruptor” and “Green Tech” categories, and finalists can be listed in those categories as well as the technical categories. ORNL has five Market Disruptor finalists and one Green Tech finalist.
The R&D 100 winners will be announced in November at an event in Las Vegas. Here are the finalists:
- Infrared Nondestructive Weld Examination System—Zhili Feng, lead, with partners ArcelorMittal USA and Eagle Bend Manufacturing Inc. The technology is a finalist in the Analytical/Test and Market Disruptor-Service categories.
- Hillphoenix Advansor Transcritical CO2 Booster System—Developed by Hillphoenix and ORNL, Ed Vineyard, ORNL team lead. The technology is a finalist in the Green Tech and Mechanical Devices/Material categories.
- iCRAWL—A user-oriented intelligent web crawler, developed by Georgia Tourassi and Hong-Jun Yoon, listed as a finalist in the IT/Electrical category.
- CORE-Direct (Collectives Offload Resource Engine)—Developed with Mellanox Technologies with Michael Kagan as ORNL team leader. Listed in the IT/Electrical category.
- Hyperion—Automated Behavior Computation for Compiled Software, Kirk Sayre, ORNL team lead. Listed in the Software Services and Market Disruptor-Product categories.
- Porous Graphene Desalination Membrane—Sheng Dai and Shannon Mahurin, lead developers, listed in the Mechanical Devices/Material and Market Disruptor- Product categories.
- Solstice N40 Refrigerant—Submitted by Honeywell International and ORNL, with Omar Abdelaziz as ORNL lead. Listed in the Mechanical Devices/Material category.
- BAAM-CI (Big Area Additive Manufacturing-Cincinnati Incorporated)—Submitted by Cincinnati Incorporated and ORNL, supported by the lab’s Manufacturing Demonstration Facility, Chad Duty leading, and listed in the Process/Prototyping Category.
- CoNNECT 2.0—Activity-Based Recommender System for Energy Services, developed by a team of researchers led by Olufemi Omitaomu and listed in the Software/Services category.
- Multifunctional Superhydrophobic Transparent Glass Coating—Submitted with United Protective Technologies with Tolga Aytug as lead ORNL developer. Listed in the Mechanical Devices/Materials and Market Disruptor – Product categories.
Three technologies were entered by firms that partnered with ORNL:
- Atmosphere 200 Environmental Gas Cell—Submitted by Protochips Inc. and supported by ORNL, Larry Allard, team lead. Listed in the Analytical/Test and Market Disruptor – Product categories.
- Universal Grid Monitoring and Analyzing System (UGMAS)—Submitted by the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, with ORNL support led by Marcus Young. Listed in the IT/Electrical category.
- Genoa 3D Printing Simulation Software—Submitted by AlphaStar Corp, with ORNL support led by Vlastimil Kunc. Listed in the Software/Services category.
