Oak Ridge Schools start Monday, August 3. It’s the first year under a new balanced calendar.

The first day of school, August 3, will be early dismissal for all students. The second day, Tuesday, August 4, will be early dismissal for elementary and middle school students.

Counselors and facilitators reported to work on July 13, and teachers will report on July 27.

The last day for students will be Friday, June 3, 2016.

The school calendar shows four quarters in the school year of between 42 and 49 days each, for a total of 183 instructional days.

See student school hours for the first week of school and regular hours for the rest of the year and cafeteria prices in this press release. Registration for Extended Child Care is on July 29 and 30, and information on ECC can also be found in this press release.

The Oak Ridge Board of Education approved the balanced calendar for the 2015-2016 in April 2014. The balanced calendar is different than the traditional school calendar, and it gives students about nine weeks of classroom instruction at a time.

The balanced calendar will allow “intersessions” during the three two-week breaks in the school year. These intersessions will replace summer school, and the number of students permitted to attend will depend on the number of teachers willing to work. The calendar dismisses students in early June for a seven- to eight-week summer break.

The balanced calendar was endorsed by a majority of Oak Ridge parents and school staff in two separate telephone surveys in February and March 2014.
