Teresa Brittain, executive director of the Free Medical Clinic of Oak Ridge, will discuss the continuing need for charitable healthcare facilities—even in the era of the Affordable Care Act—during a lunchtime meeting today (Tuesday, April 7).
Brittain will be the guest speaker at Lunch with the League at noon Tuesday in the Social Hall of the Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church, which is located at 809 Oak Ridge Turnpike.
When the Affordable Care Act was signed into law on March 23, 2010, there was uncertainty about its impact on the Free Medical Clinic of Oak Ridge.
The clinic opened for patients on January 15, 2010, in the former Trinity United Methodist Church. Its mission is to offer free medical services to those who live in Anderson, Morgan, and Roane counties who do not have any insurance and cannot afford to pay for medical services due to their income, and are not eligible for government subsidized health care.
Brittain will provide an update about the continuing need for charitable healthcare facilities—even in the era of the Affordable Care Act, a press release said. She will address the gaps in medical care and the people who are left unserved. She will also discuss the implications of the Tennessee decision not to expand Medicaid and the impact on FMCOR patients.
Lunch with the League is sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Oak Ridge, and it is open to the public. There is no cost to attend, and reservations are not needed. Box lunches will be available starting at 11:30 a.m. on a first-come, first-served basis for $8, or you may bring your own. Coffee and tea are provided.
