A paralegal from Tennessee Taxpayer Project will discuss the fate of immigrant women in a lunchtime lecture in Oak Ridge on Wednesday.
Paula R. Murphy Trujillo will speak at the Wednesday meeting of the Altrusa Club.
Murphy Trujillo began work in 1996 as a volunteer at the Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee in the Oak Ridge office.
She was then hired in 2000 as a paralegal for the Tennessee Taxpayer Project, and she continues in this capacity today. She has acted as an outreach community paralegal and has assisted Hispanic clients on matters regarding immigration, naturalization, public assistance, and domestic violence. Across the state of Tennessee, the Project and Murphy Trujillo have successfully helped documented immigrant people, including victims of domestic violence, who often are being cheated by their abusive spouses.
Murphy Trujillo has a bachelor’s degree in political science and J.D. from La Universidad Nacional de Trujillo, Peru, and she is a licenses attorney in Peru. She is a member of the National Lawyer Guild foundation, and is on the Board of Community Education Development Networking of East Tennessee (CEDNET), as well as being a part of The Latino Taskforce and serving on the boards of CASA and the Centro Hispano of East Tennessee.
She has lived in Oak Ridge from 1984-1987 and then again from 1996 to today.
Altrusa International is a service organization comprised of community members focusing on leadership, partnership, and service with an emphasis on literacy and education.
This meeting will be held at The Double Tree Hotel in Oak Ridge at 215 South Illinois Avenue. Networking begins at 11:30 am, the lunch buffet opens at 11:45 am, and a brief business meeting starts at noon, with the program to follow. Visitors with a reservation are welcome to attend.
