The snow may be over for this week, but the coldest days are yet to come. The Oak Ridge Fire Department will coordinate with the local Red Cross office and other organizations to provide shelter for those who lose power.
The National Weather Service has forecast temperatures in the teens to possibly as much as 10 below zero over the next 48 to 72 hours.
“Residents are encouraged to use extreme caution if you must go outside,” the City of Oak Ridge said in a press release. “Dress in layers and minimize your exposure to the cold temperatures. Also, bring your pets inside.”
The Oak Ridge Fire Department reminded citizens to follow the manufacturer’s instructions if you are using portable heaters to heat your home or apartment.
“This is especially true for kerosene heaters, as you must maintain proper ventilation,” the release said. “You should also consider using a carbon monoxide detector when using gas logs or kerosene heaters to heat living spaces. Keep all heaters away from combustible products such as blankets, curtains, and furniture.”
With temperatures predicted below freezing Wednesday night and Thursday, the Fire Department will coordinate with the local Red Cross office and other organizations to open shelters in Oak Ridge for individuals who may lose power. One initial collection point will be the Oak Ridge Civic Center.
If extended power outages begin to occur, the Civic Center will be open for temporary shelter until individuals can be relocated to other Red Cross facilities. If you need shelter assistance call the Oak Ridge non-emergency number (865) 425-4399 for instructions.
