A man injured in a late December accident on Interstate 40 in Roane County died from his injuries, according to the Tennessee Highway Patrol.
The crash happened on I-40 near Gallaher Road in Kingston on Saturday, December 27.
Troopers said that Josephine Yeager, 18, of Dayton, was driving a 2004 Kia minivan in the far right eastbound lane near mile marker 356 and was trying to change lanes into the far left lane when she hit a 2014 Cadillac sedan driven by Norma L. Craig, 70, of Cookeville. The collision forced the Cadillac off the left side of roadway into the center median, THP Trooper Alexander Evans said in a report.
Craig’s car went down the center median and up an earth embankment before going airborne from I-40 and landing on Gallaher Road below, the report said.
The car continued sliding across the roadway and struck a concrete divider, Evans said. It then slid slightly away from the concrete divider and stopped on its side.
Both Craig and her front passenger, Jack W. Craig, 79, of Cookeville, were trapped and had to be extricated, the report said.
“The autopsy of the front passenger of (the Cadillac) showed that the cause of death was due to crash-related injuries,” said the December 28 report.
The Craigs were using shoulder and lap belts. Norma Craig was injured, and she and Jack Craig were taken by ambulance to the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville, the report said.
Yeager and her passenger, Kaitlyn M. Moorman, 18, of Dayton, were also using shoulder and lap belts, and they were not injured. But Yeager was cited for a failure to use due care and failing to pass safely.
