A driver was able to escape from a pickup truck before it was hit by a train on railroad tracks alongside Dutch Valley Road in Marlow on Sunday afternoon, a fire official said.

The Chevrolet S-10 pickup had apparently hit the ditch alongside Dutch Valley Road, went airborne, and landed on the tracks, where it was stuck, said Stephanie Fox, assistant chief for the Marlow Volunteer Fire Department.

It wasn’t immediately clear how much time elapsed before the truck was hit by the train near Smith Road. The crash was reported at about 2:50 p.m. Sunday.

Fox said the driver had minor injuries and was taken by ambulance to Methodist Medical Center.

Bystanders reported that the driver was able to evacuate from the truck through a window, and the pickup was later struck by a westbound train, which pushed the truck upright and into a ditch adjacent to the track, according to fire photographer Tom Scott.

Fox said the Norfolk Southern train stopped after the crash, but the train crew was not injured.

Besides the Marlow Volunteer Fire Department, the Anderson County Sheriff’s Department and Tennessee Highway Patrol also responded to the crash.

More information will be added as it becomes available.

Thankfully, no one was seriously injured. Too many people drive far too fast on Dutch Valley Road. Hopefully, seeing this will get them to slow down for a day of two.
