Sheriff seeks suspect in Craigslist home rental scam

Two people have been arrested, and authorities are seeking a third suspect allegedly involved in a Craigslist rental scam involving a home on West Wolf Valley Road in Claxton, Anderson County Sheriff Paul White said today.

More than a dozen victims responded to a Craigslist ad about renting the home, and they reportedly left deposits with a person they thought owned the home, but didn’t, White said in a press release.

He said the victims discovered the scam when some of them tried to move into the house.

One of those arrested, 25-year-old Clinton resident Kayla Marie Beck, is being held in the Cocke County jail until she can be driven to Anderson County, White said.

He said Beck and a juvenile male were arrested Tuesday by the Cocke County Sheriff’s Department. The boy is the son of Clinton resident Shannon Renee Leffew, who is also wanted in the case, and he was taken to the juvenile detention center in Knoxville.

Leffew, 37, has been charged with 12 counts of aggravated burglary, seven counts of misdemeanor theft, five counts of felony theft, and one count of criminal conspiracy, White said.

Her last known address was on Coconut Lane in a Claxton mobile home park.

“However, she has relatives in Cocke County and is believed to be in the Newport area,” White said.

The sheriff asked anyone who has more information to call the Anderson County Sheriff’s Department at (865) 457-2414 or call their local law enforcement agency.
