Honors: Nurse in Family Birthing Center named ‘MMCer of the month’

Shelia Justice, licensed practical nurse (LPN) in the Family Birthing Center at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge, has been named the “MMCer of the Month” for September.

In her duties, Justice provides care for post-partum mothers and babies as well as post-operative patients in the Family Birthing and Women’s Services Center. She is a scrub nurse for c-section deliveries and assists with other deliveries. Justice also ensures that the department is well-stocked and at the ready for patients. She has been with Methodist for a cumulative 13 years.

Justice is described by Donna Longmire, director of Surgical Services, as “an asset to Covenant Health, Methodist Medical Center, and the Family Birthing Center.

“She receives many comments from her patients that she is very attentive,” Longmire said. “Co-workers comment that she does whatever is needed to provide patient care, never complains, and conveys a positive attitude.”

The person who nominated Justice for the award said, “Shelia always arrives early for her shift with a huge smile, and she is always a pleasure to see at work.”

The nomination continued by noting that she hears patients compliment Justice repeatedly for the wonderful care she extends to them and their families.

Longmire noted that Justice is very flexible with her schedule and has the unique skill of being a scrub nurse as well as an LPN.

The nomination added: “Shelia does a wonderful job taking care of our post-partum and surgical patients. She is truly an asset to the Family Birthing Center. Not only is she an excellent nurse on the floor, she is also proficient in the operating room as a scrub tech.”

“I have always been an LPN and scrub tech in this department,” Justice said. “I love what I do, and I am very happy taking care of others.”

When asked about receiving MMCer of the Month, Justice said: “I’m humbled for the special recognition for employee of the month. Thanks to all of my co-workers and management for the acknowledgement.”

Justice also noted a special word of thanks to her mother, Doris Justice, saying, “She has helped me through nursing school and has always been there for me.”

Justice lives in Oliver Springs and is a member of Orchard View Baptist Church. She enjoys going to antique sales, painting ceramics, drawing, and spending as much time as she can with her family and friends.
