Proceeds from a Rock and Root 30K at Haw Ridge on Saturday will be donated to Friends of Haw Ridge, a press release said.

The 30K is the first big event for Peak Mountain Sports LLC. It’s the company’s premier trail race this year, the press release said.

“A 30K trail running race—the Rock and Root 30K is an epic adventure of trail running that recreational athletes, elite runners, and everyone in between will not want to miss,” the release said. “Using the technical and hilly terrain of Haw Ridge Park in Oak Ridge, runners will conquer a wild journey through single track trails of short steep climbs, and breathtaking lakeside views.”

The release said the course is a challenging two-lap loop course that will consist of meandering “rock and root” trails that traverse in and around the 780-acre park.

“Overall, the course is fast and ripe for a runner looking to set a new 30K personal record, but it is not without challenge,” the release said. “Nearly half of the climbing done each lap comes courtesy of an absolutely grueling half-mile climb that averages 9 percent and tops out at over 25 percent and is also wide enough to fit eight abreast. This climb is known locally as the Hill of Truth.”

Registration for the Rock and Root 30K closes the day of the race. Current registration prices are $45. Day of race registration is available at $55. There will be no refunds and no transfers.

Packet pickup will be available the day of the race from 7 a.m.-8:30 a.m. The race starts at approximately 9 a.m., with an awards ceremony to be held immediately following the race. On-site camping will be available.

Several sponsors have lined up to support the event. The press release said Peak Mountain Sports has created several unique opportunities for people to get outdoors and push their limits since starting in the winter of 2013. The company has hosted a free trail race series comprised of three different trail races throughout the winter months and hosted a Trash Run, where runners picked up garbage while they raced, and the amount of garbage picked up along the trail helped their overall finishing results (this, too, was a free event).

Registration information for the Rock and Root 30K is available here. You can also see the website at www.peakmountainsports.com.
