Elizabeth Louise Burgess

Elizabeth Louise “Betty” Burgess, age 88, of Oak Ridge, passed away Friday, August 15, at Emeritus of Oak Ridge.

She was born in Alton, Iowa, on May 31, 1926, the daughter of Victor and Clara Schneider, the oldest of five children.

After graduation from high school, Betty moved to Washington, D.C., to work for the FBI. While working there, she met George William “Bill” Burgess, and they were married in Washington, D.C., in November of 1948.

She had seven children, six grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.

Betty was an active member of Saint Mary’s Catholic Church in Oak Ridge.

She was preceded in death by her husband Bill in July of 2006.

Her survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Dr. Lee Payne of Fairbanks, Alaska, Susan and Bill Varner of Knoxville, Ann Burgess of Oak Ridge, Mary Burgess of Oak Ridge, and  Janet Burgess and her husband Matt Thornton of Vero Beach, Florida; and sons Tom Burgess of Oak Ridge and Bill Burgess of Kingsport.

There was a funeral mass at 10 a.m. Tuesday, August 19, at Saint Mary’s Catholic Church. There was a private burial following the mass.
