New Circuit Court clerk winner after Roane recount

On Thursday, it looked like candidate Sarah E. Stewart had won the election for Roane County Circuit Court clerk.

But there was a new winner after a Friday recount: candidate Ann Goldston, who is now a deputy clerk.

Roane County election officials recounted every vote in Thursday’s state primary and county general election after an early voting memory card that had stored about 1,300 votes was not turned in. Election officials called it a human error.

The recount showed Goldston won 4,876 votes (41.5 percent) to Stewart’s 4,538 (38.6 percent). The earlier results, before the recount, showed a narrow win for Stewart.

Finishing in third in that race in both counts was Marty Miles, who had 2,349 votes (20 percent) in the recount.

The recount changed the final vote counts in other races as well, but not the outcome. Here are the updated, unofficial election results in several contested races with all 24 precincts reporting:

Roane County Executive

• Ron Woody, the incumbent running for a second four-year term—6,910 (58 percent)
• Mike Farmer, a former one-term mayor defeated by Woody in 2010—5,012 (42 percent)

Roane County Sheriff

• Jack Stockton, the incumbent running for a third four-year term—9,195 (74.3 percent)
• Jared A. Hall, a Rockwood Police Department patrolman—3,187 (25.7 percent)

In the race for Roane County School Board 3/4, Mike Taylor collected 1,015 votes (37 percent) to 859 for L. Sam Cox (31.6 percent) and 843 (32 percent) for Mike Smith. Two seats were available.

James Brummett of Oliver Springs and Steve Kelley of west Oak Ridge were unopposed for two seats on Roane County Commission, District 4.

In Oliver Springs, City Judge/Recorder Joseph Van Hook and Court Clerk/Finance Officer Ramona Walker were also unopposed.
