James Howard Day

James Howard Day, age 91, of Oak Ridge, passed away Thursday, July 24, at his home.

He was born February 6, 1923, in Sneedville, Tennessee, the son of Anderson “Otto” James Day and Jenny Irene Livesay Day.

He served six years in the U.S. Marine Corps. During World War II, he was a radio supervisor in the Pacific Theater for 30 months, with duty at Gilbert Islands, Kwajalein Atoll, Saipan, Guam, Iwo Jima and Japan. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for duty on Iwo Jima.

Mr. Day retired as a general supervisor in the Instrumentation and Controls Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory with 38 years of service.

He was a member of First Baptist Church of Oak Ridge.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wives, Margaret Rice Day and Gretchen Hamilton Day; brothers, Leonard, Claude, Paul, Carl, and John; and sisters, Mildred Neumeister, Alma Heisler, and Mary Van Slyke.

He is survived by son, Dr. James H. Day Jr. and wife Dianne of Ventura, California; sister, Joann Boyer of Morristown; grandchildren, Janel Day, Taylor Day, and Channing Day; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral service is Tuesday, August 5, at 10 a.m. at Weatherford Mortuary. The burial will follow at Oak Ridge Memorial Park with full military honors provided by the Volunteer State War Era Honor Guard.

The family asks that any memorials be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
