New After Dark series continues with Pirate Night, ‘The Goonies’ on Friday

Almost 1,000 people attended the first-ever After Dark event in Oak Ridge last week, and the summertime entertainment series continues again this week, with Pirate Night scheduled for Friday, July 18.

The movie, “The Goonies,” will be be shown indoors in the Oak Ridge Civic Center Gymnasium because of the rain. It’s expected to start around 7 to 7:30 p.m. The Civic Center is at– 1403 Oak Ridge Turnpike.

Children are encouraged to dress as their favorite character in conjunction with the movie, a press release said. Characters from the movie will be on hand for photo opportunities.

“So, bring your blankets to sit on the gymnasium floor or you can sit on the gymnasium bleachers,” the press release said. “Get out of the rain and enjoy a movie with your fellow Oak Ridgers!”

The ORCVB asked people to not bring lawn chairs to tonight’Â’s event; only bring chairs when the event is outdoors.

The Oak Ridge After Dark series feature movies and comedy, providing free, family-friendly entertainment in a safe environment for all ages at A.K. Bissell Park. The series started Friday, July 11, and it ends August 15.

The first event last Friday involved fun activities, face painting, and a dusk screening of a popular Disney film to fit the evening’s “Beat the Heat” theme, a press release said. Many children dressed as their favorite princess and participated in a pre-movie sing-a-long in front of the crowd.

“We’re excited that the first event had such a great response, and we plan to keep that momentum going,” said Sam Jones, marketing coordinator for the Oak Ridge Convention and Visitors Bureau. “It’s always great when we can bring residents from Oak Ridge together with visitors from surrounding cities to showcase all that our city has to offer.”

The remaining dates for the Oak Ridge After Dark series are Pirate Night on Friday, July 18; Comedy Night on Friday, August 8; and Hero Night on Friday, August 15. Activities are planned beginning at 7 p.m., with the feature entertainment beginning at dusk, a press release said.

Oak Ridge After Dark is presented by the ORCVB and sponsored by UCOR and Oak Ridge Nissan. Children are encouraged to dress as their favorite characters in conjunction with each theme. Themed characters will be on-hand for photo opportunities.
