Honors: Becky Cox named April’s MMCer of the Month

Becky Cox, a registered nurse in the Post Anesthesia Recovery Unit, or PACU, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge, has been named the MMCer of the Month for April.

In her duties, Cox prepares patients for surgery as well as cares for their needs in the recovery room. She joined Methodist as a student nurse in 1979 and has been employed as an RN since 1981. Prior to working in the PACU, Cox worked in the Acute Care Unit and was one of the first two RNs to open Methodist’s Cath Lab in 1988.

Cox is described by Deborah Lively, nurse manager in the PACU at Methodist, as “dependable, committed, and someone who provides excellent care to each and every patient and family she comes in contact with.”

Lively continues by saying, “She is a team player and works well with all of her co-workers, surrounding departments, and physicians.”

The person who nominated Cox for MMCer of the Month says: “She is kind and compassionate with her patients and puts their minds at ease, prior to and after surgery. She makes sure that she takes care of the families she encounters as well as her patients.”

Lively adds that Cox has received multiple compliments and “thank yous” from patients and families during discharge phone calls.

This nomination continues by saying how Cox is committed to her co-workers, Methodist, and her patients. An incredible example of this dedication is that during a big snow storm this winter, Cox walked five miles through Oak Ridge so that she could be at work at 5 a.m. Cox simply stated: “I needed to be here; I had to open the unit and get ready for our patients.”

The nomination concludes, “Becky is what I consider to be the picture of a true MMCer. She would never ask for recognition but does so much to be recognized for in her everyday life in the Methodist PACU/Holding Room.

When asked about receiving MMCer of the Month, Cox said she was very surprised, overwhelmed, and humbled by the award.

Cox lives in Oak Ridge with her husband Lynn, a manager at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. They have three grown children: Meredith, who is also an RN at Methodist Medical Center; Abbey, a teacher at South Clinton Elementary School; and Thomas, a student at the University of Tennessee. Cox’s mother, Shirley Ingle of Oak Ridge, is retired from Methodist Medical Center.

Cox is a member of Central Baptist Church in Oak Ridge. She loves being with her family, her church, and has a great love of music.
