THURSDAY, APRIL 10

Election Selection for Judicial Candidates (Chancellor and Juvenile Judge) – April 10

Location:  Oak Ridge Chamber of Commerce – 1400 Oak Ridge Turnpike, Oak Ridge.  Time:  7:30am

Join fellow Oak Ridge Chamber Members and learn more about the candidates so you can determine your Election Selection!  This week, we will host candidates for the office of 7^th District Chancellor and Juvenile Court Judge.  The following candidates have confirmed their plans to be in attendance:  Chancellor:  Nikki Cantrell; Mike Farley.  Juvenile Court: Lauren Biloski; Michael Clement; David Dunkirk.  There will be time to meet the candidates during unstructured social time followed by a structured question and answer session.  This is a wonderful opportunity to talk with candidates and learn first-hand their thoughts and positions on key issues facing our community.  These sessions are FREE and are open to the public.  For additional information, contact Greta Ownby at [email protected].

Celebration of the Young Child – Children’s Museum of Oak Ridge – April 11

At this Celebration, there will be “make and take” crafts, a fire safety skit from the Oak Ridge Fire Department; creative movement with National Fitness, a puppet show by Brain Minders, snacks and healthy living from Anderson County Health Department, and storytelling with Adele A. SARG’s Third Annual “Paws for Life Gala” – April 11

Location:  Doubletree in Oak Ridge.  Time:  6:00pm – 8:30pm

SATURDAY, APRIL 12

Oak Ridge City Egg Hunt – April 12

Location:  Oak Ridge Civic Center – 1403 Oak Ridge Turnpike.  Time:  11:00am-1:00pm

There will be more than 15,000 candy and prize filled eggs hidden in A.K. Bissell Park with a first, second and third place prize egg in each age group.  Participants should assemble in the Civic Center gymnasium prior to 11:00am.  The children will be divided into separate age groups from four years old through 4^th grade, and they will be escorted to their respective hunt areas.  This event will be held “rain or shine”, so participants should dress for the weather.  If severe weather prevents hiding the eggs outdoors, they will be given away in the gym and a drawing will be held for the prizes.  Volunteers needed.  For more information, visit www.orrecparks.org or call 865-425-3450.

 

“Double Feature” – Dinner and a Concert – Oak Ridge Symphony Orchestra Concert – April 12

Location:  Oak Ridge High School Performing Arts Center – 1450 Oak Ridge Turnpike, Oak Ridge.

Pre-Concert Dinner – Saturday, April 12 at 5:30pm.  Dinner will be catered by Caramella Catering.

Connect to the Earth on the North Ridge Trail – April 12

Location:  Hike will begin at the Children’s Museum of Oak Ridge – 461 West Outer Drive, Oak Ridge.

Saturday Tennis – Oak Ridge Tennis Club – Every Saturday

Location:  Jackson Square Tennis Courts – Broadway Avenue, Oak Ridge

Participate in an informal get-together of local tennis players on Saturdays. “New Millennium” Concert – Oak Ridge Community Band Wind Ensemble – April 13

Location:  Oak Ridge High School Performing Arts Center – 1450 Oak Ridge Turnpike, Oak Ridge.

Aid to Distressed Families of Appalachian Counties (ADFAC) Dine & Donate Begins – April 14

On April 14th, the following restaurants will be donating a significant portion of their sales to ADFAC, a local nonprofit working to provide hope and stability to our less fortunate neighbors:  Razzleberry’s, Subway, and The Soup Kitchen in Oak Ridge and Hoskins Restaurant, Subway, and Riverview Grill Seaford & BBQ in Clinton.   For additional information, please visit, www.adfac.org.

 

Exercise for Fitness – Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings

Location:  Oak Ridge Civic Center – 1403 Oak Ridge Turnpike, Oak Ridge.  Time:  9:00am-10:30am

Disc Golf:  Random Draw Doubles – Every Tuesday

Location:  Carl Yearwood Disc Golf Course – Bus Terminal Road, Oak Ridge

Time:  6:00pm – 8:00pm

Oak Ridge Farmers Market – Open from mid-April thru late November

Location:  Adjacent to Historic Jackson Square (East Tennessee Avenue, Oak Ridge).

The Oak Ridge Farmers Market is open on Wednesdays from 3:00pm – 6:00pm and on Saturdays from 8:00am – Noon from mid-April thru late November.  In addition to locally-grown vegetables, herbs, fruits and berries, local producers offer honey, meats, and specialty cheeses.  Fresh baked breads, cookies, granola, scones and more are market favorites from local bakers.  A diverse collection of flowering and vegetable plants and fresh cut flowers are available from seasoned local growers.

“Atomic Energy:  A Life Magazine Exhibition Prepared in Consultation with the United States Atomic Energy Commission” – thru April 20

Location:  American Museum of Science and Energy (Lobby) – 300 South Tulane Avenue.

A 1948 panel exhibition prepared by Life magazine for distribution, and was announced in National Committee on Atomic Energy newsletter 66 years ago.  The vintage photographic panel exhibit portrays the constructive uses of atomic energy, and the need for international control.  Artifacts included are the panel display shipping crate, an exhibition pamphlet stamped American Museum of Atomic Energy, and at least one book mentioned in the pamphlet will be displayed.  This exhibit was donated to AMSE in 2013 by the Samuel P. Registration Open for AMSE Science Explorer Camp – thru May 1

Science field explorations, hands-on activities, and a tour of Oak Ridge National Laboratory will be offered during the AMSE’s Science Explorer Camp for rising fifth (must be 10 years old by June 10, 2014), sixth and seventh graders during two June sessions.  Located at Freels Bend Cabin in Oak Ridge, AMSE’s Science Explorer Camp is scheduled for June 9-13 (Mon – Fri) and June 16-20 (Mon – Fri) from 8:00am-3:30pm.  Cost for a one-week camp session for AMSE members is $150 and for Non-Members $175.  Camp registration is available online now athttp://amse.org/visitors/summer-camps or you can pick up a registration form at the Museum.  For more information, visit www.amse.org or call 865-576-3200.

 

Life Development Center – Haw Ridge Park

Located:  Haw Ridge Park on Edgemoor Road, Oak Ridge

This facility has a challenging but safe rope course and the staff can provide other exciting adventures such as rock climbing, backpacking, white water rafting, and caving.  The center is also available for camping, family reunions, team building retreats, company picnics, birthday parties, and youth group outings.  The CenterÂ’s proximity to Haw Ridge Park and Melton Hill Lake also make it ideal for mountain biking, trail running, and canoeing.  The rates are determined based on the size of the group and the activities.  You can contact the staff at 865-200-1790 or send an email to [email protected].

The Wells Fargo Heels and Wheel Duathalon – April 12

War at Windrock – Windrock Park – April 12

Sheep Shearing Day – Museum of Appalachia – April 25

In pioneer Appalachia, farmers sheared their sheep each spring for wool to spin into yarn or fill quilts.  The Museum of Appalachia will renew this annual ritual on April 25 from 10:00am to 2:00pm, trimming the winter’s growth of heavy wool from its flock of sheep.  The wooly animals will be trimmed by Kentucky native John Cooper, who will explain the process to onlookers while using vintage hand-cranked shears operated by “student power”.  Spinning, weaving, and quilting demonstrators will show how wool was used to make yarn and quilt batting in the days before ready-made clothing and superstores.  For more information, call 865-494-7680 or visit www.museumofappalachia.org.

 

10^th Annual Clinch River Spring Antique Fair – May 2 and 3
