Obituary: Troy Charles Estes

Troy Charles Estes, age 73, a resident of Harriman, passed away Saturday, April 5, at his home, in Harriman.

Mr. Estes was born Oct. 15, 1940, in Swain County, N.C. He moved to Knoxville in 1976 and on to Harriman in 1977, where he continued to live.

Before the move to Tennessee, Mr. Estes graduated from Southwestern Technical Institute in Sylvia, N.C. He moved to Tennessee and began his employment with Oak Ridge National Laboratory as a laboratory tech. He continued his employment at ORNL until his retirement in 1996.

He was a faithful Christian and a member of the Big Emory Baptist Church. He was also a member of the East Fork Masonic Lodge #460 F and AM.

Mr. Estes began his military service in 1961. He served our country in the United States Air Force until his discharge in 1965.

He loved his family and enjoyed spending time with them. Additionally, he enjoyed hunting and gardening.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Sam William Estes and Birdie Brooks Estes, and by four brothers, Fred, Edward, Carl, and Robert Estes.

Mr. Estes is survived by his wife, Wanda Stokes Estes; by sons, Troy Charles Estes Jr., and John Daniel Estes and wife Amanda, all of Harriman; and by grandchildren, Julia Marie Estes, Maggie Elizabeth Estes, and Riley Danielle Estes.

He is also survived by sisters, Dorothy Davis of Dillard, Ga., by Marjorie Douthit and husband Earl, of Bryson City, N.C., Agnes Hawkins and husband Joe Ed, of Whittier, N.C., and Peggy Chambers and husband Joel Austin, of Chickamauga, Ga.; by brothers, Paul Estes and wife Joyce, of Seymour, and J.D. Estes and wife Diane, of Whittier, N.C.; as well as several nieces, nephews, extended family members, including a special cousin, Johnny Estes, and by a host of special friends.

The family received friends Tuesday, April 8, between 5 and 7 p.m. at Sharp Funeral Home. The funeral followed at 7 p.m. with Pastor Robert Hawkins and Pastor Randy Roper officiating. Burial and graveside services, with full military honors, were held Wednesday, April 9, at 11:30 a.m. at Roane Memorial Gardens.

The family expresses their gratitude to the nurses and CNAs at Harriman Health Care and Rehabilitation for the excellent care provided to Mr. Estes.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Parkinson’s Association of East Tennessee.
