“Oak Ridge’s Mercury Saga†will be discussed at Lunch with the League on Tuesday, March 18, at 12 p.m.
Carolyn Krause will speak on the events leading up to mercury contamination in Oak Ridge, the role of the media in making the contamination public, the response of the scientific community to the pollution event, and its influence on decisions about the cleanup. She will talk about the role of Oak Ridge National Laboratory, a world center of expertise on mercury in the environment since the 1970s.
Krause, now retired from ORNL, was editor of the award-winning ORNL Review research magazine for 25 years. She has also been a science writer and technical editor at ORNL and currently contributes to The Oak Ridger’s Historically Speaking column. A resident of Oak Ridge since 1970, Carolyn worked for The Oak Ridger as a science reporter for 4.5 years.
The meeting will be held in the Social Hall of the Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church, located at 1500 Oak Ridge Turnpike.
