Obituary: Marjorie Louise McMaster Quinn

Marjorie “Marge” McMaster Quinn of Oak Ridge died on Feb. 3, 2014.

Mrs Quinn was born July 25, 1923, in Oak Park, Ill., to parents Lois Woodcock and Robert McMaster. She graduated from Oak Park/River Forest Township High School and attended MacMurry College for women in Jacksonville, Ill., for two years. She then worked for the F.B.I. in Chicago from 1943 to 1947. It was here that she met her future husband, Henry A. Quinn. They married in September 1947 and moved to Oak Ridge, where he was senior resident agent out of the F.B.I. Knoxville division.

Mrs. Quinn was an active member of Covenant Presbyterian Church since 1967, where for more than 20 years she was the newsletter editor, sang in the choir, and volunteered in the woman’s organization serving in several capacities.

She was chaplain of the local NARFE chapter when it was first organized, was active in the Oak Ridge Woman’s Club, and was on the organizing committee of the Oak Ridge Christian Woman’s Club.

Mrs Quinn enjoyed gardening and visiting out-of-town family. One of her favorite hobbies was needlepoint and counted cross stitch, much of which she gave to family and friends. She also enjoyed reading.

After Mr. Quinn retired, they enjoyed traveling together, visiting 45 of the United States including Hawaii and Alaska, much of Canada and Australia and New Zealand. They also took several cruises including passage through the Panama Canal.

Mrs. Quinn was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and her brother James R. McMaster of Hilton Head, S.C., and his wife.

She is survived by her beloved son Robert A. Quinn of Oak Ridge, nieces Lindsay Bullinger and her husband Tom of Maple Grove, Minn., Sara Frederking of Berwyn, Ill., Jane Valley and her husband Jim of Farmington, Conn., and great-nieces and nephews.

Many friends are Mary and George Stevens, Kim McMahan, Scott Parkhurst, Betty Reinoehl, Yolanda Poutsma, Sylvia Powell, Lisa and Bradley Clapp, all of Oak Ridge, and Linda and Sidney Finger of Lebanon, Tenn., her present pastor and his wife Nick and Carol Wilborn, and former pastors and their wives David and Ann Hall of Powder Springs, Ga., and Jim and Julia Harrell of Brentwood, Tenn. Also very special to her are members of the SAGE dinner group and Friday Bible study groups at Covenant Presbyterian Church.

Mrs. Quinn loved her Lord and her church family and of her own and church families she found this quote which meant much to her: “True friends are God’s most precious gifts, except for the gift of his son, and in our darkest moments help us to keep going even when we think we can’t.”

Honorary pall bearers are Mark Buckner, Bradley Clapp, George Stevens, Scott Parkhurst, David Hall, and David Seay.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Covenant Presbyterian Church, 3000 Clearview Court, Oak Ridge, TN 37830, or to the donor’s favorite charity.

The family received friends Saturday, Feb. 8, from 1–2 p.m. at Covenant Presbyterian Church. The funeral followed at 2 p.m. with Pastor Nick Wilborn officiating. The burial at Oak Ridge Memorial Park will be private.
