Dolores “Dee” M. Young

Dolores “Dee” M. Young, age 90, of Oak Ridge, passed away Saturday, Feb. 1, 2014, at her home.

Dee was born April 14, 1923, in Indianola, Penn., to the late Steven and Esther Matalay. She graduated from high school in Hickory, Penn., and moved to Oak Ridge in 1945 and was employed at K-25 and was married to Joe Young June 28, 1946, in a ceremony held at Chapel on the Hill. Dee attended the University of Tennessee, was president of Toastmasters Club, president of Aglow Christian Women’s Organization, and later president of The Oak Ridge Christian Women’s Club. For more than two decades, she was the owner/operator of her home/boardinghouse for the professionals, students, and doctors who came to Oak Ridge to work for ORAU and ORNL. Dee was active in Heritage Church for more than 25 years, and in later years she attended the Oak Ridge Alliance Church. Her special interests were politics and above all, mentoring the many people who called her for her prayers and nurturing sprit.

In addition to her parents, Dee is preceded in death by her husband Joe E. Young, son Marcus A. Young, and her sister Frances Heide. She is survived by sons Douglas Young of Oak Ridge and Kenton Young and his wife Donna of Oak Ridge, daughters Barbara Wilks and her husband Bill of Alvarado, Texas, and Valorie Hinds and her husband Henry “Bud” of Oak Ridge, eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, and a sister Ester Ann Parker and her husband Jim of Granbury, Texas.

The funeral service was held Tuesday, Feb. 4, at 7 p.m. at Heritage Fellowship with Bro. Dale Crank officiating. The graveside service was held Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. The family received friends prior to the service from 5 to 7 p.m. at the church.
