Knoxville Council member featured at MLK breakfast Monday

A Martin Luther King Fellowship Breakfast on Monday morning will feature Knoxville City Council member Daniel T. Brown.

It’s the 26th annual breakfast, and it’s sponsored by the Atomic City Sportsmen Club. The program starts at 8 a.m. Monday at the East Tennessee Family Services Building at 1660 Oak Ridge Turnpike.

Brown is a Knoxville native and a graduate of Austin High School. He graduated from Tennessee State University with a bachelor’s degree in history. He is a Vietnam veteran and received an honorable discharge from the U.S. Army, a press release said. Brown retired from the U.S. Postal Service.

The release said Brown was first elected to serve on the Knoxville City Council in 2010. On Jan. 10, 2011, he was appointed by his fellow council members to serve as interim mayor of the city, becoming the first African-American to hold that office. He served in that position from Jan. 10, 2011, through Dec. 17, 2011.

Brown is currently involved in a number of diverse organizations including the Dandridge Avenue Neighborhood Association, the NAACP, Beck Cultural Exchange Center Inc., and the Association for the Study of African American Life and History. He serves on the Audit Committee, the Public Property Naming Committee, as well as on the boards of the Knoxville Transportation Authority, Affordable Housing Trust Fund, Knoxville Zoo, Dogwood Arts Festival, and Blount Mansion. He is a former Member of the Knox County Board of Zoning Appeals.

In commemoration and celebration of the strong community support for the breakfast program over the years, the customary $5 donation is being waived, and there will be no charge for attending this event, the press release said.
