A Windrock Road fire on Sunday night burned an unoccupied home. The fire was reported at 7:55 p.m. Sunday at 805 Windrock Road.
There were no injuries, and the cause has not been determined, said Stephanie Fox, Marlow Volunteer Fire Department assistant fire chief.
The first firefighters to arrive on Sunday night reported that the house was completely in flames, fire photographer Tom Scott said. Fire engines weren’t able to drive up the home’s long, narrow dirt driveway, so firefighters had to drag a fire hose more than 700 feet by hand through brush and trees to get water on the house.
Fox said there was a chain on a gate on the driveway, and firefighters had to cut it to gain access. But the the severely rutted driveway was inaccessible to trucks, she said.
Scott said the center structure of the unoccupied house was an old cabin built of heavy logs with more rooms added on.
There are no hydrants in the area, and water had to be shuttled to the fire. Fox said firefighters were on the scene for about 2.5 hours.
The fire was in the Marlow Volunteer Fire Department area. The Anderson County Emergency Medical Services and the Anderson Sheriff’s Department also responded and so did the Oliver Springs Fire Department, which was dispatched on an automatic mutual aid alarm.
This is the second major house fire in the area in a little more than two weeks. A house was destroyed on Hoskins Gap Road near Windrock Road on December 27. A wood-burning stove started that fire, Fox said.
