The Lady Wildcats’ soccer season ended with a 2-0 loss to Hardin Valley Academy in a subregional game on Tuesday.
Coaches said the game featured two good, evenly matched teams, but the Hawks took advantage of opportunities while Oak Ridge did not. Among the missed opportunities for Oak Ridge was a free kick that hit the crossbar with less than three minutes left in the game.
“They just finished theirs,” Lady Wildcats coach Jason Schmieg said. “We didn’t finish ours.”
Hardin Valley (16-1-4) moves on to play top-ranked Farragut (16-2-3) on Thursday.
The Hawks led 1-0 at halftime Tuesday on a goal by Gabby Powers. They added another in the second half on a score by Taylor Shott.
The number of shots on goal was relatively evenly matched for much of the game.
Wildcats fans weren’t ready to see the season end. Oak Ridge won a district title on Oct. 18 and finished the year 13-3-5.
Schmieg, who finished his first season with Oak Ridge, said he couldn’t have asked for more from his players. Schmieg was hired this summer to replace Tom Gorman after he resigned in early June to become the fitness manager for the Rush in Oak Ridge. Gorman compiled a three-year record of 43-10-8, including a 2012 District Championship,
Schmieg said eight of the players in Tuesday’s match were seniors, and most have committed to colleges. Many of the other girls are returning to play next season, he said.
“I’m already excited about next year,” Schmieg said.
