American Idol finalist Janelle Arthur is expected to play in Oliver Springs at 1 p.m. today during the October Sky Festival.

Arthur had been part of the first-ever all-female Top 5 on the popular televised singing competition in April.

The 6th Annual October Sky Fall Festival started at 9 a.m. today (Saturday) and continues through 4 p.m.

It’s organized by the Oliver Springs Historical Society and the City of Oliver Springs.

The “Heritage at the Depot” will feature the East Tennessee Historical Society exhibit, Windrock Coal Miners, family and church histories, a quilt show, and local artists, the festival website says.

Festival coordinator Julia Daniel said there is much to do, with activities featured downtown; Joe Lawson, treasurer of “In Your Attic” at the museum; and other participants and activities including Bill Landry and rocket launchers.

Arthur is expected to play at 1 p.m. at Oliver Springs High School, Daniel said.

The annual October Sky Festival is Oliver Springs’ way of commemorating the filming of the major motion picture “October Sky,” which was filmed in Oliver Springs in 1999.

Janelle gave an excellent performance to a large appreciative crowd, and then she stayed for about an hour to talk with fans and sign autographs. She even used local band The Fairfield Union and her uncle (all top-notch musicians in their own right) instead of bringing in a hot-shot band from Nashville. A class act all around, and she deserves to be hugely successful.

Thank you for the update, Peter. I had hoped to attend but was not able to. I did see a short video clip of the show, though, and I wondered who the band was.
